Dry Substrate after First Flush and Bottom Watering
    #27023009 - 11/05/20 10:29 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

I had a pretty good first harvest and Im trying to go for a second flush. Im using Bods Unmodified tubs and I bottom watered. I know I spilled a little water on the top of the sub, but it still seems dry. Should I bottom water or mist the surface, or is this not necessary?

Thanks!

You should mist the ever living shit out of that surface. It's common practice to do this between flushes but in your case it's even more urgent because the surface looks in dire need of a heavy misting.

You don't bottom water between flushes, you dunk and then drain the water. However, a dunk is something very few people do these days, it's enough with a heavy misting between flushes, and maybe subsequent mistings the days after if you had a heavy flush.

Bottom watering is going to do little now. You bottom water when pins start to pop up and only if the pinset is heavy, just to give it an extra boost. Then you can see how that water gets absorbed in a matter of a couple hours. Right now it ain't going to get absorbed, it's just going to pool and do nothing, so you can drain it right now.

You let it become or created the sub too dry, the telltale sign to me is the light brown color of the coir, saying "im too dry"

Yeah when i created the sub it was at field capacity and the first flush was pretty good. I did not do any misting during the colonization and fruiting so that probably why it go too dried out. I misted and its looking much darker in color now. Still trying to dial in the proper surface conditions and what to look for.
Thanks for your help!
