Pan Subbs???
    #2702278 - 05/19/04 04:38 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

Hi guys,
This is my first post in about 2 years and my first find since then. I was hoping someone could tell me if these are Pan Subbs. I have found subbs before and these seem to be almost identical, but I always like to get a second opinion. I am getting a spore print right now, but it looks like it's going to be purple/black.The stems are kind of thick and break easily. Thanks for the help!

If they are not Pan Subbs, then what are they. They fit every description of pans and I have found them many times before...

What color are Pan Foe spore prints? Also, I have some a few really big ones with stems that are 1/2" thick. I thought that Pan foes didn't get that large. Someone please help.

Ehhh... It's hard to say but I think you do have subbs or some other Panaeolus. The stem is nice and thick and look almost exactly like subb stems.

What were they growing from?

They were growing in grass (very well fertilized grass, rich woodland neighborhood). I know that pan foes grow in grass more so than subbs, but these just seem too big and the caps too gnarly to be pan foes. Their spore prints are dark as night.
As for the amount, I have never just found a few pan subbs. It's always a shitload. Last time I went, I found almost twice as many.
Man, this sucks. If I could find out the color of a foes print, maybe that would settle it.

I know that a subbs print is jet black and im pretty sure a foes is brown but dont take my word for the foes.

If what you say of the stems is true, then they sound more like subbs than foes. Subbs' stems are thicker and break easier than foes', often you can wrap a foe's stem completely around your finger without it breaking

The spore prints are black. As far as any blueing, I can't tell. They definitely bruise, but I can't tell if it's blueing or not. I have had trouble telling this in past experiences too though. Any other ideas??
Thanks.

Man, hard to say what color, kind of brown, dark bruising... I'll probably go ahead and eat them tonight anyway. If they are something else, I don't know of anything else that resembles pan subbs that is harmful. If I do decide to go ahead, I'll let you guys know what happens, but I'm going to wait a couple hours just to see if anyone else has something good to say.

Thanks
