Is hydrated lime a must with casing layers?
    #27021554 - 11/04/20 02:05 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

When making a casing is it a must to add hydrated like? I want to do a 50/50 with verm and peat moss with a bit of Gypsum. In the UK hydrated lime isnt available so I was hoping I can case without it?

A peat casing is usually a very good idea if you're growing PE varieties. The rest of varieties do very well with no casing at all or with a casing of coir at spawn. So unless you're growing PE I personally wouldn't bother.

Buy calcium carbonate online, that's your lime. Add it at ~ 2,5% by volume

I'm not in the UK, but it seems to be possible to buy:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/300g-Calcium-Hydroxide-Reef-Kalkwasser-High-purity/140440571467?hash=item20b2e90e4b:g:bmMAAOSwEppUUm3U

You could also check out supplies for sea-water aquariums - they use calcium hydroxide for it. Every shop who sells sea water equipment should be able to get it.

Shops for pickling stuff as well. Hydrated lime is used to pickle vegetables and stuff.

Yeah I'll be growing apes. Everything else doesn't have a casing.

Is this safe to use? I thought it has to be food grade

Ape don’t require a casing the same as regular PE. You should still use the normal 1/4” or so top layer of sub but a proper casing isn’t necessary.

I’m not sure what the difference would be in food grade lime but that stuff seems ok

I think so yes. The aquarium people are more concerned what they put on their fish than what they eat, so that stuff is probably very pure.

And even if not 100% pharmaceutical pure - you won't eat the casing and you don't eat 5g mushrooms every day. And you only need a tiny bit to push the PH of your casing to 7.5 to 8 . You will be good for sure.

You definitely want to get a PH test possibility. I use simple test papers. Lime is very powerful, easy to overdo it.

What RC said, APE does very well with a plain layer of coir substrate (or coir/verm) at spawning. I never bothered with a peat casing for APE.
