Glass petri dishes

Im about to attempt making petri dishes and ordering all the supplies I need currently. Im going to start with a sleeve on plastic petri dishes to start out with but I was wondering if its possible in this hobby to use glass ones and sterilize them effectively? I searched through the forums and found conflicting views on it so I'm not really sure ๐คทโโ๏ธ is the only upside to plastic convenience and price?
If its a good idea I was going to order these one

of course you can use glass petris. they're easy to sterilize in "sterilization pouches". get the 7.5"x13" size. you should be able to fit 4 plates in each pouch. you can buy them anywhere but here's the first link i found: https://www.zogomedical.com/sterilization-pouches

60mm plates are really small. go for 100mm or 110mm

you put the glass petris inside the pouches, fold the seal over to close, then put them in the PC for 1 hour @ 15 psi. it allows steam to penetrate the paper but not contams.

Im assuming you have to put them inside on a glass container when you do that? Is there any difference between using these pouches or just sterilizing the petri dishes by themselfs inside of something in the pc?
I dont know anything about this so Im sorry if thats a stupid question ๐ฌ

you don't want the pouches sitting in water, no. you'll need to elevate them somehow in the PC. i use a metal plate on top of some glass jars. if you sterilize the petris by themselves in the PC, they'll get full of water and contaminated as soon as you open the PC and grab them with your hands. the petris will stay sterile inside the pouches until you open them carefully in your SAB.

I have been using cheap soda glass ones for a while, that's what I started with but I am moving to PS ones instead shortly
I do mine in the oven, stacks of five or six wrapped in foil, 180C for an hour, unwrap in the SAB
then make agar and pour as normal
never considered sterilization pouches, no experience of that but it sounds like a nice idea that I may look into also if I stay with the glass a little longer

I bought a used set of pyrex petri dishes from ebay for around $35, came with a nice metal sleeve and a rack. I believe it fits 10 or so dishes, but I've broken a couple over the years. Fits perfectly in my PC.
They work great.

Spawn bags can also be used. They're more expensive, but they can be used multiple times before they get ratty enough to discard.

Glass is the way to go in my opinion. Definitely don't see a point in ordering sleeves of plastic petris constantly as it is wasteful and you always have to keep track of how much you have. Sure plastique is a lot easier to work with since they are lighter, but as I said having to constantly order them seems like a pita.
This thread pretty much sums up what you need to know. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/20563394
I've only been using glass and while they are a bit clunky to work with, the advantage of reusing them outweighs all the cons in my opinion. I sterilize mine by putting them in a tall PP5 container that holds about 10 petris. I have 2 such containers and I usually just put them in the PC when sterlizing grains, so ideally they are sterilized for 1:30 - 2h. I wrap the lid of the container with alu foil and when you sterilize them they stay sterilized until you open the container, meaning you can pre-sterilize them and have ready to go petris whenever you want. The thread I linked says you neet to put a vent with some polyfill, but I've found you don't have to do that. Sterilization pouches work too, but if you have to keep ordering them it kind of defeats the purpose if you can do it in a reusable pp5 container. You can also do it in the oven, but I've yet to find a container (jar) that can fit enough petris for it to be worthwhile, but if need be you can always wrap them in foil and bake 'em.
100x10mm are the easiest to work with for me, with a little training you can pick up about 6 or 7 of them at a time when pouring. You don't really need borosilicate petris. If you don't temp shock the soda glass ones they will last a long time. Just my 2 cents.

I put mine in stacks of five, wrap them in two layers of tin foil, then bake them in the oven at 200c for like 30 mins. Or for however, long my agar is in the PC. I fire up the oven before I start load the PC so in reality the plates are in there for:
Code:
(the time it takes to load the pc)+(venting time)+(time for PC to come up to pressure)+(the full PC time for the agar bottle, ~30 mins iirc)

Been wrapping stacks of 5 soda lime dishes 90mmx15mm in foil and PC them with the agar 20-30mins. Transfer to SAB and pour. Seems to work fine so far. Have some autoclave bags so going to trying them instead of foil.

foil in the oven works fine like everyone else said but sterilization pouches were designed to sterilize things. they're what actual labs use. the nice thing about sterilization pouches is that you can sterlize something and then set it on the shelf for months until you decide to use them. a pack of 200 is only about $25 so cost isn't an issue. 200 pouches x 4 plates per pouch = 800 plates. you'd probably spend more money on foil to sterilize that many plates.
