SNOWY WEATHER
    #27017812 - 11/02/20 04:28 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I recently bought an AWD car. Never had a 4wd and don't need one. I like that front wheel drive cars handle well but this AWD car does a little better it seems. I'll know for sure soon here in CO. I was just thinking of when I do get another car that maybe I should go back to front wheel drive because of the gas consumption. Mine gets about 16/26-7 and the front wheel gets about 19/28-9. Kind of significant over a period of years. This fluctuates with gas prices as you know. Does anyone have a preference of front, back, 4, or all wheel drive cars?

i think it really depends on the particular conditions you encounter on the regular, do you get alot of black ice in CO?

FWD is a standard for a reason. It's easy to drive in many conditions, does well in snow and ice, and it gets great gas mileage. It also has less components than AWD, meaning better reliability. Most AWD cars are setup like FWD cars, they then run tiny rear wheel drive components to create rear drive, and that aids forward acceleration.

AWD generally is not safer. It is in fact heavier, and thus have longer stopping distances. The marketing is just that.

Rear wheel drive is great if you want a sport cars, terrible for just about everything else.

Only AWD car id ever buy or recommend is a subaru. They have like a 90 / 10 FWD bias when going fast, at slow speeds (when it matters) the ratio is more like 60 /40 if I remember right. so basically its 90% front wheel drive most of the time. Even the old ones

Also the rear end acts like a limited slip differentianl. I think they have another word for it. Thats probably what the person above me was talking about. They really are superior to other AWD cars. They do astonishingly well on snow and offroad.

FWD is absolute shit in snow. Watch out for the 2.5L  subaru engines they blow head gaskets like no tomorrow.

I an not the average vehicle consumer, I have a 80s 4x4 truck. And an 80s 2wd mini truck thats slammed to the ground. little bit of both worlds lol.

The 90s subaru I once owned was mind blowingly capable offroad, I loved that thing

Keep in mind that the locking differential is mostly marketing. I won't get into the technical bits (technical bits incoming), but basically the locking differential is a center differential (this a good thing), otherwise known as a "viscous coupler." AMC Eagle actually did the AWD with viscous coupler situation starting in the early 80's, Subaru copied it. This in mind, this doesn't mean that you can get one wheel drive like a true center driven Torsion type three differential arrangement (like a real Humvee not the GMC made ones). It's a good cheap way of providing real time power management, but it's no better than Honda's or Toyota's or Ford's awd system. It's common arrangement I guess is what I am saying.

I'm not ragging on Subaru's, I am considering trading my SportWagen in one for one. That said, I'm sure you have purchased a great car, so good luck!

This is the newest car I've ever had/bought so far. I really don't think I'd buy a brand new car. Maybe a year old or 2, but never brand new. It's a Buick and I love it. Cruising to Texas in it for the week of thanksgiving.
