Lion's Mane Contaminant Question
    #27017725 - 11/02/20 03:15 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I have started my first blocks of Lion's Mane on sawdust, wood chips, oat bran and gypsum. The colonization seems to be going well, except there is a small amount of yellow fluid in several spots, which ends up collecting in the bottom creases of the bags. Does Lion's Mane have metabolites just like Cubensis strains? Or is this some sort of bacterial contaminant. Hard to get pictures through the bags due to condensation, but will try if anyone needs them to diagnose this.

Thanks for your time and expertise!

PS - Since I'm so new at this, I could sure use some thoughts on the best way to work through the fruiting stage of this species in bags! Should I soak the colonized block, or simply open the top and poke holes in the bag while keeping the whole thing above 95% RH and well misted. Anyone ever try removing the blocks from the bag and fruiting in a shotgun chamber?

Yep, I think I've gotten metabolites from every species I have grown. I tried putting a block in a fruiting chamber (It was a PMP tho and it was shiitakes) and it works too. I personally don't bother with a soak until after first flush. 95% seems pretty high rh, (especially to maintain a good FAE) maybe search around for other grows of lion's mane and double check the rh that the successful grows used. Good luck!

Pretty much any species can produce metabolites, lion's mane doesn't usually make a lot, so it may be fighting some bacteria or something.  Likely not a worry.

For fruiting, do not remove the block from the bag or top fruit it, for best results keep the bag closed tightly and try to get all the air out, then cut some slits or x's in the bag and let it fruit out of there.

Thanks, man. It may be too late. I did let it top fruit, though those turned out beautifully. I wish I had your advice sooner. But still, Lions Mane is a fucking amazing species. Can't wait to grow more. Can they be easily cloned? Maybe get a good LC out of one of them?

Yeah you can clone but I wouldn't go straight to lc, clean it up across agar first
