First Time Growing Golden Teacher Mushrooms

Hello. I'm new to growing Mushrooms and started on the 06October2020. I'm just using this post as a journal to show what I'm doing, what I did, how I screwed up and the timeframes for everything. Just doing this for other noobs out there so they don't make the same mistakes I did.

Main Research Sources used:
  • Psilocybin Mushroom Handbook, 2006 by L.G Nicholas and Kerry Ogame
  • BOD's Easy AF Oat Tek
  • BOD's Easy AF Monotub Tek
  • BOD'S Easy AF Bucket Tek for Coir
  • Pastywhyte's Easy Lid Tek

06-07 October 2020 (Prepared 12 Grain Jars and Inoculated Them)

Inoculated Grain Jars from Golden Teacher spore syringe. They say you're not supposed to do it... But that's what I did. Shook up the Spore Syringe and injected 1CC into each jar.

The grains I used were Producer's Pride Whole Oats purchased from Tractor Supply Store near my area. To prepare the grains, I followed Bod's Easy AF Oat Tek:

Bod's Easy AF Oat Tek

The jars used to hold the oats were one quart Ball Jars. The lid's used were the Ball Reusable Plastic Storage Lids. I didn't use any filters or any form of fancy modified lids... All I did was turn the plastic lids until they were loose and barely on as shown in PastyWhyte's Easy Lid Tek. It was super easy and I don't have to deal with any filters:

27 October 2020 (Golden Teacher Jars fully Colonized)

So as you can see in the image, it took around 20 days for the jars to fully colonize. I started off with 12 Grain Jars, and lost 2 of them to bacterial contamination. I'll discuss the reason I think it happened below.

The two partially colonized jars in the middle of the image ones I redid on the 22-Oct-2020 using colonized Golden Teacher grains from another jar.

Newb Issues I dealt with

  • Bacterial Contamination of 2 jars. It smelled fermented and the Mycelium died after 10 days.
  • Slow Colonization of the Jars

Reason for the Newb Issues:

So I'm 100% sure that the reason for both of the issues above was due to the grains being overcooked and way too wet. They were stuck together in a big compact clump... And there was probably excessive water which facilitated bacterial contamination... This is why I lost the jars.

I followed Bod's Oat Tek prep exactly and even used the suggested oat brand... And it came out too wet. This is no attack against against Bod... But I highly suspect that the reason that the reason for Bod's Oat Tek turning out too wet and overcooked has something to do with the stark difference in climate. I live in an extremely humid southern state that is borderline tropical and I think Bod lives in a very dry and arid Western state so he has to use more water in his mushroom cultivation recipes then a grower in a very wet Southern State.

Solving the Newb Issues:

  • So if you live in a state like Florida, Mississippi or Louisiana, use less water and don't cook oats as long as suggested in Bod's Tek. As recommended by Bod, as soon as you see a few grains begin to burst... Turn off the stove and drain the oats immediately. For me, that meant that I didn't even wait for the water to get to a boil before turning the stove off. In total I cooked the oats for 15-20 minutes before starting to see burst grains. This yielded perfectly hydrated grains for my humid Florida environment.

As you can see in the image below, these are Grain Jars I made for Koh Samui Super Strain by cooking the grains less. The image was taken 12 days after inoculation and shaking:

  • After PCing grains, as the pressure in the PC drops to zero, remove grain jars and shake them like crazy until they are loose. If you just leave oat grains in the PC to cool down without shaking... They will stick together.

  • So what if it's too late and your grain jars are overcooked and already partly colonized? Well they stick together in a giant chunk.... This slows colonization down significantly and increases risk of contamination. So to solve this issue... I had to use a clean spoon that I sanitized with flame and alcohol to manually break up every single grain jar into small chunks. I did this in a SAB and it took 2-3 hours to do because I had to clean and sanitize the spoon each time after doing one jar. I then violently shook the jars to mix everything. This is a very risky procedure to do this with partially colonized jars... But it worked. Within 3-4 days, the jars fully colonized.

In total because of Newb errors, it took about 23 days to go from spore syringe to 10x fully colonized 1 quart grain jars. Now it's time to fruit the jars using Bod's Monotub Tek... Wish me luck.

Bro some of those jars don't look to good, show us a pic of each jar!
