Metabolites or Infection?? Please help!
    #27013838 - 10/31/20 01:26 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hello everyone,

Longtime lurker here. Finally attempted to spawn my own grain for the first time. Got 6 quart jars of wheat berry grain, each is growing at its own rate. The one that is closest to 100% was looking fine until I shook it at 75%. It started to show little orange spots a week after. Can someone please verify if:

1.) Is this grain still viable to fruit?

2.) Would I be okay using this grain with the rest of the jars in a monotub?

3.) If it's an unworkable infection, how would I get rid of this stuff?

Thank you in advance for your time!

Here are some photos, not sure if I'm linking them properly so I'll leave a link to the album below.

Edit: black spots are vermiculite from the bottom after shaking

Could be a couple different things. Grains that are “too wet” will colonize much slower. It looks like there’s a couple spots of that. But also some orange spots, which could be contam. It’s hard to say from the picture if it’s metabolite or contam, but definitely keep an eye on it.

Thank you for your input!! I feel like the contam is looking more orange than most of the photos of metabolites which is what concerns me.

When you say keep an eye on it, does that mean the myc could potentially come back? How would I know if it's still usable?

Think I should trash it? Would it be worth doing a shoebox tek?? What do you think about the super orange parts?

:whathesaid: Especially if you have 5 more jars, I wouldn’t risk using this one. Of course you can experiment with it separately, but I personally don’t eat fruit if contam was anywhere in the spawn. Bacteria produce toxins that will be absorbed into the fruit.
