Shoeboxes appear too dry...(edit: currently pinning)
    #26993994 - 10/20/20 05:57 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So I know I should have cased these; they're albino penis envy but I've always done monotubs of them uncased and had good results. These seem to be drying out really quickly. The top shoeboxes still have condensation but the mycelium dries pretty quick. I keep misting it but the myc looks like it might be matting.  Any suggestions?

It's my first attempt at shoeboxes.

You already know but the answer is to have cased them.

Try bottom watering them. That's what I did with my first-ever shoeboxes when they were drying out before the first flush

Since they're unmodded they have their own learning curve compared to monos. For me the issue was that the spawn:sub ratio was off. I was doing 1:1, with 2 quarts of spawn. And the variety was PE which I think require more water than most other varieties

Point being, even if the TEKs say that they should be set and forget before first flush, every individual case varies slightly. If you think they need more water, then give them more water

I literally just run the faucet on low in one corner of the shoebox until it fills up about halfway up. Then I leave it there for 20 minutes or more. I've left them for hours with good results

Some lil' fat bois popped up. Definitely seeing a lot of knotting and pinning all over. Still dry though. I tried your watering method, kept it in about a half hour then drained it. But see how dry the surface is already? I just misted it a few hours ago.

I'm pasteurizing a verm/peat casing layer for a tub right now. I'm thinking to add a small casing layer to these if there's any left. I should still be ok to case, right?

Might want to keep them in a mono next time so they dont dry out so fast aje you can mist less.

Liner, wax paper, probably wud have produced a more even and better pinset.
Especially liners are popular for how they create better surface conditions
and make cleanup easier.

some people might even suggest a late casing here

You can still case it. Get some jiffy mix and case it.

Yeah once the myc is dried out it never holds water right. It’s one of the things that irritates me the most.

Sprinkling a little casing on wouldn’t hurt. On the bright side you’ll probably get bigger fruits than usual if there’s not as many.

Ok everyone is all cased and happy! Let's see how this goes. I've never cased before so this is also an experiment.

Did you read the late casing tek?

I’ve never really tried it but I think when it’s already fruiting you’d just want to barely cover the surface. Idk for sure though. It’ll be interesting either way.

Also did you use coir or peat?

I used verm/peat/lime. Maybe a quarter to half inch covering then misted.

I use grocery bags on my shoeboxes. Creates a nice RH tent.

Tonnns of side pins. I gotta say, I do not like unmodded shoe boxes at all. :sip: I won't be doing this again. Monotubs all the way.

I've been doing shoeboxes exclusively for 2 years. It's very annoying how each one's conditions seem to vary.  I'm guessing from manufacturing and the way the lids fit causes a varying degree of FAE. Some are overly wet, some have pooling from condensation and others get bone dry but still have relatively the same appearance if just glancing at the the condensation and evaporation areas around the top

Side pins are pretty easy to tame though if you tamp the sub down well, especially around the edges and corners.  Still probably get some mid/after first flush when it starts to pull away from the sides though.

I took it out of the shoebox and into a half assed fruiting chamber with some perlite.

Probably the best plan. Hopefully you can get some good fruits from those side pins. The flatness and sliminess freaks me out and they go straight to the compost pile

Side pinning happens because of the growers inability to maintain preferable surface conditions it's not because of Shoeboxes, that's pretty obvious from the countless successful shoebox grows.

YAY!    Those pins look great.  Congrats!  So glad  to see your shoebox is now growing fruit.

When you grow another monotub, I hope you will document your procedure (tek) here.    My first monotub failed due to trichoderma, and I am not sure yet what to do different next time.

I'm actually documenting one right HERE!

I just cased it and put it into fruiting.  :awesome:
