Hello,
I was a mushroom hunter when I was young and then stuff happened. Now new stuff has happened and I am rediscovering good things.
I like all mushrooms but I am looking to find a wild psychoactive friend.
I saw these in a neglected garden under some well-established azaleas.
Habitat: neglected cultivated garden. (no amendments, just raking)

Gills:

Stem:

Cap:

Spore print:

Bruising:
blue

General location: Northern Vermont within earshot of New Hampshire

Definitely an active psilocybe. Psilocybe azurescens is my guess.

Edit: I just noticed you are located in Vermont. Psilocybe azurescens is normally found only on the west coast. However, these do look a lot like p. azurescens so I'm curious what more experienced members have to say.

I was just comparing these to various psilocybes and thought that they look a lot like p. aztecorum. But I thought that p. aztecorum only grew in Mexico?

No, Psilocybe quebecensis was described from eastern Canada and was later determined to be synonymous with Psilocybe aztecorum, which is now known to also grow in north-eastern USA, so I would suspect these might be that

Ah I see, that's interesting. I take it this is a pretty rare find though given OP's location?

Well I'm not 100% sure on the ID given the rather blurry photographs, but yes, they are not found often, though they must be more widespread than they seem, considering the same species grows in Mexico and Canada

someone posted not too long ago about finding some P. aztecorum in Quebec; I remember them having quality documentation of the finds.

That is exciting.I'll get better pictures. Which feature (other than focus) should I focus on when taking a better picture?

Good shots of the gills, cap, and entire stem are helpful, maybe describing the substrate (ie what they are growing out of). I know the poster in that link i sent talked about yellow birch (Betula alleghaniensis) being the most common substrate they were finding - noticed in your pic only evidence of Populus grandidentata (Bigtooth poplar/aspen).

Don't know what your forecast is, but right now i'm looking at 4-8 inches of snow today and tonight combined. Might wanna get out there early!

Cool finds. I'd like to find some of these myself; I imagine it's quite possible for my area and yellow birch is one of the most common hardwoods in my forests.
