Tho one should still keep an eye out for ovoids :yesnod: ....I have yet to find them myself, they're not as common as cyans or allenii in our area, but they can def be found around nor-cal and from looking at old reports/finds of them in our area they seem to fruit just a little later than cyans & allenii (late winter early spring).

yeah i'm curious about these. do you know if they are found in the same cyan and allenii habitat? what are the nuances? I have some ovoid prints trying to get some cultures to introduce to outdoor SF spots.

Indeed they are. They are woodlovers as well.

Sorry for going off topic. Shits depressing though.

Damn, that's wild for this time of year all the way up there. That's kinda what I imagined though.

Def depressing. I hear ya.

I found my first ovoids in the same patch that cyanescens were fruiting from the previous fall. So yeah they definitely coexist in cyan or allenii patches. Or at least are able to given the proper circumstances. Here’s some of the fruitings from this beautiful patch

That's cool!

Were they actually fruiting from the same exact spot where the cyans were?...So their mycelium was in some ways "overlapping" on the same pieces of substrate? Or was it just in the same general location where the cyans were?

That's something I've always been curious about with fungi in general, about multiple species being able to inhabit the same substrate together(?). Like if one mixed spawn from multiple wood digesting fungi into a nutritious substrate what would happen(?), if one/few would dominate or if some would be able to mingle & fruit together...I've been meaning to make a thread about that and a bunch of other things I've been wondering about.

Do any of you more experienced people think we're likely to see another wave of mushrooms if the weather turns rainy again? Or does the active stuff only appear once earlier in the season?

I don't consider my self all that experienced. I've been around here for a while but only actively hunting for actives for the past 8 years, and not necessarily putting in lots of hours or miles each year that I have.

...but from what I've observed, for the most part it does seem like most patches of allenii & cyans fruit once and if the rain/moisture doesn't persist then it doesn't push up fruits again until next season. This has been a pretty dry season though so  . The (few) times that we've received abundant early season moisture since I've been hunting I've seen some patches that do keep pushing up many fruits over the course of several weeks. Over the years that I have been hunting though, regardless of how moist or dry the season was, it does seem like most patches and the amount of finds people post in these threads slow down after the new year.

Another thing to note, since it has been a dry season this might be relevant....I collected a few clumps of myc/woodchips from a patch a couple years ago that I was going to use to try to start a little patch at home. The myc/woodchips dried out entirely after sitting in a paper bag in my room for 6 to 8 weeks...Sometime in February IIRC, after nearly 2 months of being dried out, I moved it outside and started to spray/mist it with water once every day or two so the myc would come back "alive" since I was going to layer some new woodchips over them...and to my surprise it actually started to fruit around late march/early april, after sitting in the cool air of the outdoors and becoming moist again it pushed out a small handful of mushrooms. It was cool to have some fresh ones on hand during the spring time lol.

So it seems that a period of the myc & substrate drying out completely/being in warm temps for a certain period of time, then being rehydrated and exposed to cool temps can trigger it to fruit again  .

I'm in a similar situation again this time around. I have a few clumps of colonized woodchips that are dried out that I will be putting outdoors soon along with some fresh substrate...I'm curious if it will fruit.

That's cool to hear, so maybe the warm, dry weather, followed by some rain might make something happen.

If anything, I would focus on second wave cyanescens or early spring ovoids. Allenii is questionable at this point IMO, but ya never know.

Where abouts are you driving from to the bay? If you're anywhere in northern california you don't need to drive to the bay area to find them...These mushrooms can be found just about anywhere in northern California.....

I'm based in Placer county. There are some pretty big spots around the banks of the American river and Folsom lake that mushrooms thrive. I think I might go look for Gymnopilus Luteofolius and Gymnopilus Thiersii along Folsom lake after the rain.

https://ggweather.com/seasonal_rain.htm

The precipitation we have gotten so far this year was so little that I doubted it would trigger anything meaningful. That's why I was hoping this very late rain could cause some sort of mushroom miracle.

I'm pretty sure allenii/cyans can be found around the foothills/placer county, pretty sure I've heard a few reports of woodlovers being found in some of the foothill communities. I do feel they (allenii & cyans) are probably a bit less common in the foothills than they are down in the valley and coastal areas tho.

No doubt those gyms can be found in the foothills out in the natural habitats....It's pretty unlikely that you'll find any cyans or allenii in natural habitats like the banks of rivers though, around nor-cal they are found only in urban habitats for the most part.

And it looks like I was wrong in one of my last posts when I mentioned something about the incoming storm systems looking like they were going to fall apart/diminish before they arrive next week....now it is looking like most of the state will indeed get a proper soaking next week! Much much needed, don't wanna jinx it tho lol.

Only one way to find out...

I really don't think we're going to get much of a second fruiting, but doesn't hurt to get out and look.

That's more or less how I feel too.

Def possible to find some ovoids out there tho.

A lot of rain predicted in the bay area for the next week. This is my first season hunting, should we expect much out of this rain or is the season nearly over?

Well, with this heavy dumping of rain, we'll soon get a chance to see for ourselves if there's going to be a second season or not. Conditions should be pretty much ideal in another week or so.

I checked a few days ago 3 days after 2 days of seriously heavy rain.  No more fruits at that patch at all.  Maybe after the crazy rain it will though.

So I know the primary actives (Allenii and Cyans) season is pretty much done here in the Bay Area, and that Ovoids are an unlikely possibility in the springtime, but I'm wondering if any of you seasoned vets take the time out to look for Panaeolus cinctulus in the warmer months? More specifically, do you actually make a concerted effort to go out and scout around for them during the warmer spring and summer months? I know they are usually only weakly active, but I've got plenty of dried cyans on tap for consumption, and I'm really just looking forward to taking a look around for some here in the bay area for the novelty of it. I know they like high humidity and substrates with fertilizer, like lawns, but I'm curious whether any of you experienced hunters have any tips as far as finding them in the bay area in regards to microclimates, how frequently substrates are irrigated, etc. Any intel would be much appreciated!

Pan cinctulus should grow year-round. We have some areas in Oregon that were pretty California-like this year and they still grew in abundance. Usually they slow down when it gets cold but sorta not really. They grow everywhere. Check horse farms, stables, horse poo bins in recreational areas.

That's super enlightening, thank you Adden. I was under the impression that they primarily grow only during our super warm months based on most of the finds I saw on MushroomObserver and iNaturalist. I'll start looking around the manure bins at the local regional parks.

In the Bay Area we have active lawn pans that grow on fresh sod. Look out for new sod zones this is a link to some I was finding right when the sod was taking hold and being heavily watered. There were continuous flushes for a month or so, tons of these mushrooms and Conocybe apala fruiting side by side, we’ll see if they come back but I suspect not.
They probably are not true Panaeolus cinctulus but are part a complex.

Checked some spots yesterday...nada
Went by one more this morning and found one nice fruit and a pin. Will try and go back in a few days and see if the pin is still there. Feel like these are the last cyan’s I’ll find for the season.

woah chkhntr that might be the last find!  I'm gonna do one more responsible mycelium harvest on a patch in a few days, and I'll see if anything grew.  It was an insane amount of rain, but there was lots of rains before it anyway and nothing grew.

anyway, I'm excited as I'm setting up my home patch to grow outdoors!  I got a bunch of the super healthy alleni mycelium, and am gonna get the wood chips tomorrow.  Gonna do a small patch, like 3ft x 6 ft x 4 in deep.  But it'll be evenly mixed with mycelium so I bet by two years from now it will be entirely colonized and get some nice fruits!

Nice healthy fruit you got there. Is that extremely dark bruising at base or dirt?

TWM you should hop on the wood lovers thread (if you’re not already on it) and post pics of your home bed. I’m making a backyard bed too but from clones and spore germinated spawn. Hoping to have azurescens, allenii, & cyanescens side by side by side.
