Use the inaturalist website and mushroomobserver. You'll see lots of posts and look for recent ones like 2019/2020. See where they are, and that's generally where people found them. It's like a pin point on google maps. So start at those points, and literally just search all the sorrounding areas that they could grow in (i.e mulch beds, woody grassy areas) and you'll have good luck! That's what I did anyway.
you'll also see some familiar usernames too for people who make reports. I first found them in San Francisco, but then those patches got demolished by construction (argh!). So I then last year found some in South SF, but that was like a two hour drive from my house! Crazy far to go that long if they might not even be here. So I resolved to find patches near me, and the one I last found was bigger then any other patch I'd found before and maybe 10 minutes away.
Also just look when people are posting their finds here, that generally means its a good day or tomorrow is the day to go. Also also I dont think I broke any rules, but if I did let me know!

Known cyan spot in Emeryville.

And more A. muscaria in Berkeley.

And typewriter is right. Search for apartment complexes, libraries, colleges, hospitals, parks, etc. Use google maps to search for areas with lots of apartment complexes, for example, and you can check out pics of the complexes to see if they have a lot woodchips.

Thanks for the tips. I found my first psychedelic in the wild today (just a lone, solitary wavy cap), and it was kind of funny how excited it made me. It just seems so much more meaningful to consume ones you've collected than buying them.
I want to grow some, too, but we have this weird no-spores law in California. Given the open use of hard, dangerous drugs in the city, it's hard to imagine anyone caring, but that doesn't mean someone wants to ship you spores, either.

If you found one, you have access to millions of free spores and, even better, mycelium.

That's true. I know exactly the spot where I picked the cyanescens. So if I picked up a bit of the dried bark with mycelium and transferred it to a small planter with bark, watered it, etc., do you think that would work? (I guess I should try Google/YouTube for a basic question like that.)
To be honest, I most want to grow Ecuador mushrooms for personal and spiritual reasons, but it would be fun to try something native to the area while I figure out how to acquire some spores.

Yeah that'll work if the bark is myceliated enough. If it isn't then it might work but take a few years of care. In general you want to leave the bark alone so the patch stays healthy and gets bigger and bigger every year. I honestly feel awful picking them and then the stem doesnt break right and pulls up some mulch. I cringe when people post pictures of them with the mulch all ripped up unless they are spreading it all around and even though still. You gotta be responsible. If you take that bark from the lone cyan spot, that patch will die rather then expanding. Its best to find a bigger batch and responsibly harvest from that.
But yeah dude, order the right wood chops, boil/simmer them for awhile, strain them, then put them in a pot. Add the myceliated wood chips and gently mix them in. Then add maybe another small layer to the top, or some peat moss or other things that will help them grow. Water that properly, or just leave it out where it gets rained on, and you get a few more this year but next year it might really pop! and every year grow more and more.
and yeah I agree, I haven't tripped on mushrooms since I was like 19 years old. I ate a little bit of psilocybin goo last year, but just enough for getting the vibes as I was already on some L and K that night. but for microdosing, and just having them it feels much more genuine and real then growing them. especially being able to spread and colonize new patches and synergize with mama nature.
today was another good day! picked 25 p. alleni fruits most all pretty dang big! also scouted some new spots nearby I have a really good feeling about.

I appreciate the information. I want to do this responsibly, both for myself and to support the bounty of this Earth which gives us these wonderful things, as well as everything else that sustains life.

Are you getting ready to take a trip again after a long time, or are you collecting them for other people?

Maybe one day, but I rarely trip these days because of everything that's going on. And if I do trip, I tend to eat mescaline or LSD. I have a new batch of L to taste and sample anyway so that'll be my next experience. I generally harvest enough to microdose for the next year, give other people microdoses - or provide them a free experience if they need the full psychedelic experience from mushrooms. Thats what is awesome about the cyans/alleni's - 1.5g is enough to have a full experience. I'll probably harvest a few ounces this year if I'm lucky and that will just provide for me and my family and friends. Other then that I just spread stem butts and responsibly disperse mycelium to colonize more spots!
I havent tripped mushrooms properly in 10 years.. one day though I'm sure Ill take them again. But they are the best psychedelic to microdose. LSD works.. but it's different - better for breakthroughs. mescaline is great for playing music in microdoses. but overall mushrooms just win because of the anxiety/depression help, it works for music, mood booster. just yeah.

One of my hottest areas this season was a business park -- woodchips everywhere, Allenii fruiting in almost all of it. Recently, the landscapers went through with weed whackers and as a side effect churned up all the chips. You can see the mycelia everywhere.. pure carnage. Oh well, it was good while it lasted.
Life carries on though..

Transplanted some cyanescens myc into a mix of woodchips and smoke pellets in the backyard last season. Noticed these popping up today!

Also at CHK HNTR dude you fucking are killing it at finding the grass cyans in SF!!! Do you ever feel worried hunting at night with a flashlight? I feel like it might draw extra attention.

Thanks TWM, yeah I usually don’t hunt at night, I much prefer the day for the reason you mentioned but I was just excited and was headed up to Pt Reyes the next morning on NYE so I went for it.
Good luck on your hunt tomorrow!
Damn Afrogus and ounce dry! That’s a killer haul

bay area.

would anyone know if all this late rain will help? since we didn't get a lot of rain in dec. most of the patches i usually pick from aren't producing if they don't have a microclimate protecting them.
it still took me 9 hours to pick all of them. no pins were raped as i crept through the rainy night.

Wow duder that's a huge patch of super healthy looking fruits, nice! Yeah I'm always so careful where I step near patches too.
I second his question. My two patches I went to today, and picked some nice fruits. One or two might be too far gone, but I'll see if they can be dried safely. Some really nice big fruits too - it rained really hard at like 5AM though for a few hours and it definitely made things a little too damp today for picking but it should be alright.
Does anyone know in their experience how many flushes wild patches generally get? The mycelium still looks super healthy everywhere, and everytime I've come back there's new pins and new big fruits. But it's been healthily picked though. Does anyone know if it will keep fruiting well over the next month or so with all these rains and perfect weather?

I don't know much about the bay area flushes, but in the central valley, once an allenii patch flushed, I never see a second flush even when conditions seem to be right. However, I have seen cyanscens fruiting more than once a season as long as conditions are right. These are just my observations in less than 5 years of hunting.

TM: From reading this forum and talking with others it looks like if the patch continues to produce pins then it will continue to flush. If you notice a drop off in pin formation then the patch may enter another dormant period, perhaps until the next year.
Reading the previous Actives threads from the last 10 years it looks like some patches fruit from November all the way through February while others are one and done.
So if you see pins, keep going back!

Hello all,
After posting my first ID thread and finding out I have found the Potent Dandelion of detritus, Psilocybe Cyanescens.
I found that patch a couple of weeks ago here in the east bay, very far east, and very far south, although not quite SJ. I was surprised to find Psilocybe Cyan here and was expecting to find P Allenii so I was pleasantly surprised.
Well this morning I decided to pop into a place I walk by just about everyday and is closer than the known patch. I've scouted this location as mushroom friendly, both in terms of environmental conditions as well as friendly gardeners. It appears in my area the gardeners are notoriously anti fungi.
A few steps off the beaten path and what do I spy but massive patches of Leratiomyces Ceres in the planters. Beautiful big specimens that were perfectly mature. Very exciting!
On my way out I spotted a big moldy patch of something and upon closer examination I believe it to be a way past prime patch of P Allenii! Hidden in the mess of moldy caps was a well protected caramel cap COVERED in deep purple spore good. These must have fruits 2-4 weeks ago as they were well gone and the recent rains helped that along, which is unfortunate. No pins observed so I don't believe this patch will be back this year which sucks! It's the biggest friendliest patch I could imagine.
But this has established for me that they are out there despite the lack of posts to this thread!
I have also spotted a ton of new posts on iNaturalist which are not listed here, so discoveries are still being made!
Go find 'em!
