oooo beautiful posts everybody!!!! We all got such an amazing present for christmas with that rain!!! Tomorrow/day after I'm feeling lucky; I've scoured a bunch of new locations to start looking for them. After this rain I feel like I'm in luck!
I've found 4-5 other kinds of mushrooms growing, but no actives argh! The other day I maybe found a bunch of alleni pins but we'll see in the next few days. I've found them before and know where patches are in South Sf, but my goal is to find them in Marin.

Nice Psilocybe pelliculosa find. They are pretty rare in Jackson State Forest. The furthest south they have ever been found is my find from Salt Point State Park, the next furthest north recorded find is Arcata, which is where I found them yesterday. It would be a good idea to put these photos on MushroomObserver.org and iNaturalist.org to document their presence in JSF.

Thanks Alan, It was exciting to find them. I’ve looked at your Salt Point find many times. It stands out to me not only how far south but I’ve always heard they like more disturbed habitats especially areas that have been logged. So I wouldn’t expect them at Salt Point.
I posted the find on Mushroom Observer.

I meant to say the same Chuck.Hntr!....That's awesome and props to you for finding em' that far south, and for finding them in general considering how relatively rare they are .
Were you on the hunt for those specifically that day or were you just out for a walk & hunt through the woods seeing what you could find?

Thanks OM! I went up to JDF from SF just to camp, be in the woods, and see what fungus I could find. I’ve been really liking NOTmush’s posts on the PNW active thread (not sure if you follow it) but he is up in BC and slay’s it on finding pelli’s. Anyway I was aware of Alan’s find at Salt Point so I knew they had been found south of where I was. Then just wandering hiking around I found myself in logged pine forest actively being retaken by nature (it seemed like their habitat) and so at that point I figured I should be on the lookout.
I was finding lots of Hypholoma dispersum (for the first time), and at that moment was unsure what they were; I thought they were beautiful but most likely Galerina. Btw most descriptions say they do not have a striate margin but all the ones I found had a distinct striate margin which makes them look so much like a Psilocybe.
I was aware of pelli’s macro characteristics and couldn’t help but pick every H.dispersum I saw. Then I saw some that were slightly more yellowish and when I touched their caps they were sticky.
After picking a few I noticed their umbo was wider than the H.d’s and the sticky part of the cap was the pellicle. Knowing Psilocybe protocol I tried to separate the pellicle from the cap. Besides the sadness of destroying the cap it’s quite satisfying to peel the pellicle, not only for the visceral sensation but also for working toward a (hopefully P.pelli) ID! I also saw dark spores on the annular zone...time for a spore print and forum post!
Alan: I also posted on INaturalist thanks for the suggestion.

Nice find! I have been going through a bunch of places in Hayward, Union City, Newark and Fremont, but no luck. This is tough ahah - I’m optimistic though.

Possible new patch found while out on a jog. When I looked closer and saw the classic blueing it warranted follow up.
It's funny how this and the other patch I found last year were very close to me vs my expeditions all across the bay last year. For new comers... they really can be not far if you keep your eyes peeled.
I've taken some samples to get spores for ID'ing. Will likely go back to get a few more to try and get better samples too.
Many look a bit over their prime day.

Note - though not directly in these little patches - close by in the landscaping (about 2-2.5m away from one patch) there were these non-actives red specimens that looked interesting especially as I'm trying to learn more about look-alikes like galerina.

Not the target, but will still be curious of what they are when I pose an ID on the above ones.

Dune Cyans from a couple days back. My first attempt on them around the N. Cal coast, got lucky. Hiked around 3 hrs, and found these just a few moments before reaching back to the parking, wasn't really looking for them by then.. lol

@Mockba-
Where did you find your porcini? All my patches this year haven't been fruitful and I have only seen 1 Amanitas Muscaria this season.

I believe so too but I am a humble newbie. I've read this mushroom is an indicator species so that is the right habitat and conditions.

yay finally on the board! I had a good feeling heading out, found 30 p. alleni really nice sized big fruits today after searching for probably 3-4 hours a day for many many days. I really wish I went yesterday to the area I was thinking, as there was probably at least a dozen huge awesome fruits that were blackened and starting to rot too much. Regardless, I am so elated. I've been super depressed for awhile lately and for some reason there's something about finding the mushrooms you're looking for that is so satisfying, magical - a real accomplishment. I probably found almost 10 different other species while looking, none psychedelic. I've found patches before in the bay area, but only two that produced very small amounts that are also like almost two hours away from my house. So I really didn't wanna drive all that way if the patch, which is in a super foot traffic heavy area, wasn't popping.
As well, i've always wanted to find psychedelic mushrooms in my home county since I was a teenager, so this is like a decade long search come to fruition! I always look everywhere I'd go lol when I lived here. Also the patch seemed to have way more growing around it too, it just got dark and I lost the light. I'm gonna go back and search the surrounding area because there's tons of that kinda mulch in the immediate area and I bet there are other patches too! I also felt kinda cursed for a bit because I was gonna trade a fellow shroomerite member some really pure L for showing me a patch area and it ended up not working because I had some heavy family issues come up, so sorry if you know who you are. But i'm quite glad the mushroom gods smiled one me, can't wait to dry them and start microdosing.
Also, two questions. I know mushrooms and psilocybin are quite heat tolerant - is it ok to dry them over a heater on low for awhile to make sure they dry properly and don't start to rot? Right now they are just drying in my room which stays about 75-78 degrees temperature. Also, is there anything to do with mushrooms that are black and rotting that otherwise will just rot back into the earth? Is it best to leave them for patch health, or is it possible to pick them, mix them up into a slurry with some distilled water and potentially colonize other areas where they'd flourish?
thanks yall!

From the very southern tip of silicon valley, south bay, found yesterday. Finally a good collection of fresh specimens, they smelled very good and psilocyb'ic. I have been trying to look around in this area for a while (almost a month or so), and almost thought it was too south or something like that. Nevertheless, finally got a first good sign of fruiting! Those Christmas rains were good..

Nice finds everyone good to see the boards lighting up!
TM- best to get a dehydrator ,can find them used at thrift stores but they are not too expensive new either. I run mine at 155F allenii and cy’s get cracker dry in 3-5hrs then store in a glass jar away from sunlight with a desiccant drying packet inside.
For this current find put them in the oven at 100-120f with the oven door cracked and check them every 30min

This has got to be one of the worst actives seasons in recent memory. Seems like most of the patches being found are leftovers from the rains in early november. Mostly p. allenii as well. I wonder why there doesn't seem to be any new patches fruiting despite the recent rains...

Thanks CHK HNTR I put them on top of a space heater with a paper towel in between on a medium setting to help expedite them. They look like they're drying well in the warm room temperature, but I don't wanna waste any or risk mold!
Any word still on what to do with mushrooms that are past good to colonize other patches? I'm gonna head out tomorrow and search the rest of the area for more alleni/cyans, but I kinda also wanna fill another bag with the ones that are all black and kinda rotting to see if I can get some sort of slurry to colonize other patches. Any advice would be lovely because they seem quite nasty to deal with.
@brownieboy
I believe its not just rain that fruits them, but cold temperatures as well. A narrowish range too. It's been proper cold where I live so they should be popping again tomorrow/the next few days after the xmas rain and other rain days lately.

This is my first post to the forum. I drove up to Salt Point last week before Christmas and found billions of mushrooms, none of which I could really identify at the time, but since returning to San Francisco have been venturing out looking for stuff. I was kind of excited yesterday to find what I thought might be Allenii growing from some woodchips, but that I'm now pretty sure are redlead roundheads.
Hunting is most of the fun for me, but I admit that I don't really know the right parts of the Presidio (which is walking distance) to search. Any tips to kind of narrow the area down or where people know there are some Allenii or wavy caps growing would be great.
Even more cool would be if someone experienced wanted to (safely, of course) go traipsing around with me one of these days, for the company and conversation.
The first photo is what I found in the Presido. The second is one that I've been wondering about since spotting at Salt Point. (I'm not asking for ID on either, just pointing out some interesting finds.)
