I have only had success with mycelium colonized wood chips or actively growing stem butts. Started my patches 3 years ago at home since I have never found an active patch in Napa. Just soaked fresh woodchips in water for 24 hours and mixed in a few colonized chips from an active patch into a ziplock bag. Sealed it up and kept it moist and dark for a few months, expanded it to planters in the back yard. Now that I have successful home cultivation I can work on spreading around my community.

It's good to know that for every clown digging up a bed with a shovel, there is someone building up mycelium at home to spread around town!

More cultivation pics, no pesticides and no clowns! The thrill of the hunt is the only thing missing š Iāve asked before a few years back but has anyone ever successfully found actives in Napa county specifically? There is plenty of habitat but without spores floating about or a culture of hunting I wonder if Iām the first to ācolonize hereā.

Nice! Sounds like you are well on your way to successfully establishing a healthy mycelium colony.

I'd been thinking about taking a look in Napa. I spent more of my childhood living in Napa than anywhere else, so i've been needing to go visit with a few folks there anyway. But now I'm not feeling too optimistic about my chances there

Man, that sucks! We should all strive to have respect for the natural resources we seek. If you are taking some mycelium home for your own culture please don't take the entire bed... If you are only interested in the shrooms then leave the myc in place.

They are definitely in Napa there are either not enough people looking or they are just not recording the finds. Iām sure they are there and potentially in less expected places (that wonāt fruit until be get a serious dump of rain).

Found a nice new untouched dune spot today.
Left plenty of pins and big beefy mature caps that were too far gone.

I'm not sure what these are, I am new to this hobby, but my nor-cal yard has exploded with them. They're beautiful. First year I have seen them...I suppose they've realized this is a fungus friendly household.

Someone forgot to add the no ID requests to the thread description huh? You've got Hypholoma there bud. Definitely dont eat those unless you want to spray out both ends. Or if you can differentiate between fasiculare and capnoides haha.

Thanks for the input.
I apologise, I didn't notice the "actives" part of the thread. I was just happy to find cool looking mushrooms in the yard.
I wouldn't eat them; I have plenty of others to eat. Besides, these don't stain blue.
My post doesn't ask for an ID, but I do appreciate you pointing out that they wouldn't be good to eat. There are loads accessible to my chickens, so I am going to remove the ones they can get to in the morning.

Hey all. Yesterday morning I went on a lovely 7 mile walk around town (Marin County), and actively had the thought that I was lucky to have harvested 40g of dried Allenii and Cyans already this year.
I brought a grocery bag with me -- just in case, which I always do this time of year. On the way back home, I decided to take a small detour, and as luck would have it I stumbled onto the biggest patch of Allenii I've ever seen in my life.
It was minimum 30' x 20', and just FLUSH with adult mushies. There was a layer of fall leaves covering most of the patch, making the majority of the patch look no different than any other area. I bent down, started to inspect, and used my hand to brush away the top layer of leaves. Every single time I swept leaves aside, 2-3 full bunches of adult Allenii were uncovered. It was like Christmas came early...over and over...for 90 minutes.
I filled the bag completely, to the point where it was difficult to tie the handles. It was so heavy in the end, that the GF recommended weighing it. I couldn't pass up the opportunity, so I drove a few blocks down to Whole Foods and used their produce scale.
5 pounds of freshly harvested magic!

I have them dehydrating on 7 (seven!) drying racks, with two big fans on full blast. I'll be going back today to get some more, and will try to take pictures that accurately show the scale of the flush.
Cheers and happy hunting.

Went out and checked on one patch I knew about and then took a quick spin over to another business that looked promising. Turns out someone found one of my patches (it was picked bare, but it was clear they used scissors - good job!) I did, however, discover many new patches with mushrooms up and coming. I'll circle back when they're a little bigger. It's encouraging to know that for every patch which is found by someone, there are many more that have yet to be discovered, so get out there!

Lupinus borealis is considered native just a few hundred miles to the south. Whos to say its presence in humboldt is not natural expansion? Could ,it be the "non-profit" friends of the dunes saying one species is invasive, but thousands of others are "exotic"? Sorry FOD, but you will never see a "native" dune mat no matter how many school children you indoctrinate to your views, and put to work pulling grass, and bashing lupines. Embrace the evolution.

Not to take this thread off track, nice finds everyone, but this is ridiculous. The lupine has a native range in central CA but not in Humboldt or the PNW. Let me explain the difference between native, invasive, exotic, and naturalized plants for ya!
Native usually refers to plants that were established here before European colonization (At least here in the US)
Exotic refers to plants that have become established outside of their native range.
Invasive refers to exotic plants that are causing harm to the native ecosystem
Naturalized refers to exotic plants that have become established but are not causing harm
Many invasive species are impossible to fully eradicate but this quote:Quote:

is moronic and just not true. There are definitely sections of coastal dunes where the invasive species have been fully eradicated, and the native ecosystem has responded positively. Go to Pt. St. George in Crescent City, or sections of Little River State Beach.
Wahanna, how about you participate in this thread with actual mushroom dune finds, instead of complaining about something definitely not worth complaining about
Keep the hunting up y'all and bash some lupine while your out in the dunes!
