Refer to this image, imagine its color combo represents your party and your values, Left or Right. What colors do you see?

STAL - I don't understand..
-------------------- Let it be seen that you are nothing. And in knowing that you are nothing... there is nothing to lose, there is nothing to gain. What can happen to you? Something can happen to the body, but it will either heal or it won't. What's the big deal? Let life knock you to bits. Let life take you apart. Let life destroy you. It will only destroy what you are not. --Jac O'keeffe

Its the best metaphor i could think of for peoples vehement division of left vs right in politics.
This illusion picture of a dress had people ranting and raving on the internet as to whether its back blue white or gold, with people vehemently defending their perception of it. Regardless of it being an obvious illusion, the phenomenon demonstrates differences in color perception among humans, to the neural level. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_dress i think Patlal even had a big thread on it when the pic came out
I think its the same in politics those who vehemently defend their left or right positions, which are both beside the point

I don't think its quite analogous though, since colour is a phenomenon of perception and not in the least objective, whereas political/moral standpoints ought to be based on philosophy and logic which -while never truly objective- can actually be debated or invalidated, whereas ones perception of colour doesn't make sense to argue about
as to the dress in that image it still looks light blue -or white in shadow compared to the background- and dark/browny gold or washed out black to me

We have perfectly smart people believing in political fairy tales. Why? (We ask) id say that most people dont understand politics well enough to defend any of it. They actually just enjoy the flavour of their team without really realizing it. Many will defend the fairy tale beliefs of their tribes all the way to their grave.
I dont see that level of delusion any different from people arguing over the color of this dress. Politics is more complicated but you could make this dress infinitely more complicated if you are to argue it on the molecular level of your brains perception of color and computer pixels, which most of us dont understand well enough to defend any of it

I do agree that most online discussion of politics is pretty poor, but that's more a problem of education and the approach to politics in most countries, rather than inherent to politics imo.
To my mind philosophy and ethics are important and productive considerations, and politics -in its ideal form- should be about applying logic and ethics to find the best use of power, which is anything but trivial since it actually does mean life and death for many people.
As to the reality of american politics today, yes you've got a point, my own country is a bit of a joke too, but the US is beyond farcical.
