My state of Qld voted today. The sitting Labour government absolutely smashed the conservatives and the Premier's handling of coronavirus was the number 1 issue.
She was heavily criticised for closing our borders but it worked. 5 million people, 1172 cases, 6 deaths. We haven't had to wear masks and life has been relatively normal for months. The couple of minor outbreaks, from people doing stupid shit, were all able to be contained very quickly.
Victoria's premier has copped an absolute avalanche of criticism for Melbourne's extra lockdown after an outbreak threatened to get out of control but to his credit their plan has worked and they have recently had a few days last week of 0 community infections.
Tourism has really suffered, the airline industry is in tatters, imports are hit and miss depending on what goods from what country... second hand cars have gone way up in price as our car manufacturing closed down a couple years ago. Fruit and veg is getting expensive as growers can't get the overseas labour. Mango picking season is underway in Darwin. Fruit picking jobs were advertised in the Northern Territory, they had 6 people apply.

What I thought was interesting was the shift in where the vote went.
The right wing, populist One Nation Party was deserted by the elderly.
The Greens held their ground.
My state is the retiree state, similar to Florida except we have a LOT of coal, and it was particularly areas including the Sunshine Coast/Noosa as well as my area of Wide Bay, with significant retiree populations, that deserted not only One Nation but also the other populist, big $ ad spending, right wing Palmer United Party.
Criticism from the minor parties and other state and Federal leaders over our closed border, before the election, only strengthened the sitting Premier's win.

I cannot imagine being elderly and still supporting the republicans, whose only covid policy amounted to sacrificing old people for the sake of the economy.

Must not be paying attention to Florida. Deaths remain on a flat line.
Your fear mongering shoving case numbers in our faces is pointless when deaths are on a downward trend across the country.
Stupid.

Deaths is only a small part of the picture. Yesterday's covid deaths in Florida were 72. That's a fuckload. 5500 new cases. Sorry dude... that's awful.

What's your point?
Oh, even more people will be able to scam health insurance with their new pre existing health condition.
Average age of Covid death is like 82.
Average life expectancy is like, 79.
Why are people afraid of a cold?
Because that's what some colds are, coronaviruses that we have allowed to spread to achieve natural herd immunity.
Which is what SARS-CoV-2 will become, another common cold.

No they’re not. They’re rising right now and have been for weeks. Stupid.
Why is it important what covid will become? We need to be concerned about what it is doing now. Chickenpox likely started as a pandemic that killed a decent percentage of the population, then became a mild childhood illness after herd immunity was achieved.

Deaths in Florida have clearly been declining.

Right. And 99% of them will survive and become immune.
