I am having trouble keeping my sgfc temp in the 70s since my space heater I used to heat the room took a dive today. My room temp is now Averaging 65-68 degrees and I’ve read not to heat the chamber directly with a heat mat. I currently have my sgfc slipped slightly into a bigger tub to catch for more airflow and also to catch any dripping water . What if I fill that bottom tote with more water and put my aquatic heater in? Kind of like a double boiler. Wouldn’t That get the chamber up to temp without direct contact to a heat source? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Yes it would, I use a similar setup to incubate colonizing cakes, and because you'll be heating up quite some water, there'll be quite some thermal mass that water holds, which makes for a really steady temp., which is easily maintained and dialed in. I was thinking of using two fruiting Water Tubs, submerged into one, large enough tote. In that large tote (with all that space underneath the actual 2 water tubs) one could then arrange a water heater and basically solve one part of the puzzle-stable temperature. While the humidity part is being solved on the inside by the water tubs themselves. Cheers
Edit: Pics of that setup. At that point cakes were still colonizing, but you might as well picture that inner tub being filled with water, and cakes fruiting, suspended on racks or something:D

I am having to work way to hard to keep proper rh and exact water tub method was suggested to me so i pulled a couple cakes from the sgfc and tried it for a few days. Different lid positions and room temps trying to get the tub set and i couldnt get a drop of condensation on the walls which made me believe it wasnt working properly so i scrapped the idea ans went back into fruiting chamber. I know a proper sgfc shouldn't need foggers but its the only way I can keep consistent rh.

A major problem is probably also that the pictured tub is way too much of a SGFC for these cakes. Make a smaller SGFC and it will be much easier right off the top, by isolating these 5 cakes in a smaller microclimate, much easier to saturate with humidity. Also, make the SGFC up to spec(about 1/4in holes in about 1,5-2in grid pattern), these holes seem too big, probably enabling way too much FAE, which in turn makes it impossible to maintain any level of humidity. Yeah, I was wondering about the condensation part too..I can't see any, but that still doesn't seem to mean that evaporation is not happening, as obviously the mushrooms like it..I don't know..

You called it. After yesterday’s adjustments I’m 99% sureTub size and build was the problem. Smaller tub and holes made an EXTREMELY noticeable difference just overnight! Thanks

Here are some pics as of today. Shorter cakes are KOH Samui and taller cakes are Fiji’s..
I’m a little concerned that the cakes seem to be drying out pretty quickly even with proper RH. I know to re dunk between flushes, just wanna make sure I don’t let them dry out before then. But nonetheless im seeing more and more pins every day so might be ok.

Those holes on your SGFC look kinda big too. Whats the rH in your grow room? Does the grow room have a HVAC? HVACs in the winter produce very dry air so u may need to soak your perlite/mist your cakes more often.
Other than that, looks good

Holes are 1/4 inch I re built the chamber for that exact reason. Yes air is extremely dry here. I think a re soak of perlite should be sufficient. I’m putting together my Martha setup so once my grains colonize I won’t have to deal with these sgfc much longer. Thanks for the tip

I have real low rh and had problems with cakes too.
Faht recently put up pictures of bags with a layer of perlite in the bottom and then the cakes on top and the bags closed up with a few pinholes.
A big problem with sgfc is tons of airflow and the chambers almost always way too big. I think the bag method is perfect for cakes in dry climate. Humidity chambers worked well for me too.

Ah gotcha. Yeah, dry climates really dry out SGFC's really fast. I had that same issue while living in a house with really hot/dry HVAC system that I couldnt control.
One thing u can do is tape up some of the upper holes on the sides with micropore tape. Another thing u can do is add more perlite so u have a larger reservoir of moisture for the air inside the SGFC to draw from. And mist a lot, on the inner walls too. Should help.

Any thoughts about dunking my cakes now to rehydrate them even though there is pens and mushrooms growing?

U should never dunk a fruiting cake. It will cause your fruits to abort. Only dunk inbetween flushes.
