Yeah, that’s what led me to it Faht.

Everyone seems to be somewhat stumped, so I obviously wanted to mess with it.

I have a feeling this will be a lengthy project, but we shall see. I’ll snap some pics of my plates and you can see just how vastly different the growth is on every single T0 plate. I’d have to run 10 different nat grows just to begin to narrow it down a bit.

I noc'd up 2 jars yesterday that were pretty rhizomorphic. I have 2 jars that were a combination of both the super fluffy tomentose growth and some rhizomorphic. The mycelium literally looks like frost on the inside of the jars.

Also after reading the monograph it seems like a manure based sub might be best along with higher fruiting temps. Maybe that's why it's so efficient at eating through contamination? The natal region and the two huts these were found at seem to be hot grasslands

I’ve had less overlay with tomentose myc so far which was the opposite of what I expected.

If anybody uses liners I’m curious if the myc gets through them like it has with mine. Thicker stuff like trashbags I can’t see it getting through but who knows.

I plan on doing a manure based, with straw also. Thinking that might help. But I also want to just do a straight coir or cvg. Haven’t decided.

I don’t use them normally, but this is going into a smaller shoebox and I’m unsure if it’s going in the GH or not. Depends on how it responds I guess. I’ll probably use a liner. But I’ll use trash bags, so might not be helpful. I’ll update you though.

Also, the pins I’ve gotten have come from tomentose growth also

Just one plate

The tomentose growth seems to like the wood more but both keep traveling. This mycelium gives zero fucks in its search for food

I'm just passing information along as I find it and throwing my ideas out here in hopes that maybe they make sense to someone smarter than me and hopefully maybe we can figure out what these things like.

I just looked at the weather data for the town between the 2 huts where natalensis have been found, Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. One was picked in January and the other in March, so I looked at the temps and they seem to be pretty high for cubes. The averages for this year (I couldn't find any other data) are:

January: High - 85, Low - 59
February: High - 84, Low - 58
March: High - 81, Low - 54

I know we talk about maintaining even conditions for mycelial development, but could there be something to the fluctuations? Going from 60 to 90 is pretty drastic compared to our 72 degree closets for cubes, right? It also doesn't seem to get a lot of precipitation, or at least this year it didn't. I don't know what the fuck happened in 1998 which is the most recent find that I can find on the google machine.

So given the grassland environment, hot temps and little rain I think it probably makes sense to try to run them as cubes but maybe a bit hotter?

I know that this is limited data and there could be absolutely zero implications to any of this, but like I said, I'm just sharing until someone tells me to fuck off with my crackpot theories.

Lol I did the same thing. They were also at a pretty high elevation so I’m gonna try restricting air somewhat and see what happens.

Sooo many variables.

The Natalensis I put onto straw, Hpoo, and coir verm then cased with some spare pan casing I had handy is starting to push up fruits...

Looks like you gonna have some fatties there Psilo...I've found when I run them outdoors on straw/manure they like to stay short and wide...

Was going thru some of my dishes and found this one with a family of pins that looks promising...

Seems like we're running slightly different subs. I dont have coir in this one, just straw, manure and verm.

This is my first time working with manure, so I'm sure I fucked it up somewhere along the line but I can't think of a more forgiving species or whatever we're calling this.

Did anyone hear back from Alan? I'm not sure if I missed it or not

They seem to like the straw Hpoo coir verm  mix...
However, they look a fair bit different from when I ran this culture on on coir verm alone.
I’m curious to see what they look like when they fully mature...

Yeah I was gonna say when you posted them first poking through that the caps looked totally different.

They kinda look like they’ll be short and fat. This is the same one you got that canopy with??

The manure one I did I got deeper colors than usual too.

Aka
This is either the same culture that I got the canopy with or a culture that came from a plate pin from that same culture. It really is remarkable how different it looks. I had no veils at all on the fruits I had before ... or very faint ones. These are still pretty light but much more obvious.

I’m anxious to see if they blue very strongly like the others did.
