dub or sub 1

i have a feeling i'm in the minority here, but i just never could get down with subs, especially when stoned, i loose half the visual experience trying to keep up with the subtitles lol ; been dubbed out since adultswim put Inuyasha and NGE on back in 06' lol
Part of me always wished I could just speak Japanese, then I would just watch the originals, tried to learn Japanese for a while, still am kind of, still got nowhere near fluent enough to be able to watch anime with original audio without the subs.
thoughts?

I can't watch anything dubbed. Subs all the way! I can't stand the voice actors on dubs, just really doesn't work for me. In my country all movies with foreign language (english, etc) have subs. I was used to it from even before I started watching anime. I don't even notice that I am reading the subs, I am pretty much just watching whatever is on screen.

I feel you. Yeah I think a lot of anime have better Japanese voice actors than english; especially when it comes to epic screams and such lol; i envy you tho, my ocd or something trips me up whenever i try and watch subs; i remember watching a movie at the theater once that had subtitles; shit ruined the movie for me; lol

Yeah I usually don't notice the subs.
However there are some shows where the characters speak really quickly and you have to focus hard on reading the subs. Like Tatami Galaxy or Saiki k. I still enjoy watching them with subs, but I need to be well rested and clear headed.

yeah; i'm usually stoned these days, so trying to read the subs and watch the show is hard as fuck for me sometimes; the other day i tried and i legit had to pause a gang of times per episode and rewind so i could read the subs lol

9/10 times I go with sub because dub can be ultra cringey. Every now and then a dub gets done really well and it’ll work and that’s fine, but I find that to be the exception rather than the rule.
Plus, subs allow my mind to fill in much of what isn’t really there - thus adding & enhancing the cinematic experience greatly. If I don’t know the language, and the subs are good, it’s amazing how much our brains fill in the blanks in a way that’s bent to enchant us (in a good way - at least - when it comes to films).
I know English & Spanish & a little bit of basic Japanese- so sometimes I’ll watch something in those with sub and then again in dub - the difference in the quality of the experience can be drastic . German, French, Korean, Mandarin, etc - if a film is originally in those languages, i find it best to watch them with subs.
It’s just something you get used to with practice.

Interesting perspective. Which dubs do you think were done well / which are the worst ones you come across?
most of the dubs i've come across have been pretty good - imo - but there have been some where the voice acting is so stale it almost made me laugh lol

Hmm, it depends. I’m talking about film in general (anime and non anime). First let me ask you this, give a list of 5 shows or movies that you’ve watched with dubs that you found to be good, then I’ll let ya know what I think.

Oh i feel you. Strangely enough foreign films with subs don't bother me much, in fact i dig a bunch of them, but when it comes to anime i just can't bother
as far as dubs with good voice acting? FMA the original Inuyasha Black Lagoon Mushishi Death Note (although the second half the show sucked story-wise imo)
there's more i'm sure; i can't really think of the shitty ones tho; i think a lot of the fan-service anime has junk voice acting lol

I prefer dubs so I dont have to read the subtitles while trying to watch the show at the same time but if an Anime is only in subtitles, then yeah I'll watch it.

My guy! yeah i feel the same. If there is an anime that I'm really stoked about watching (the second season of mushishi and inuyasha) then i'll brave the subs cuz i don't want to wait a year or more for the dubs to come out; otherwise dubs all the way lol

For live action stuff, always subtitles. With animation, I have no problem with a well done dub with good voice acting, but original audio with subs is more authentic I guess. But it's not like you're seeing the original voice actors onscreen anyway, so a dub doesn't break the illusion in the same way.

Subbed. That includes any kind of foreign film, not just anime.
Also congrats on posting 75 posts on your first day on the shroomery, OP.
