Is the internet founded on miscommunication?
    #2700203 - 05/19/04 07:59 AM (19 years, 10 months ago)

You ever get the feeling that the only reason this forum exists is because it's so difficult to communicate what we actually mean? So many threads are responded to only because people misunderstand what the poster's trying to say, and then so much time is wasted as people make new misunderstandings as they try to clear up old ones, the cycle continues on and on, kinda like a drunken argument.

So is there really any point to posting here?

And then I wonder whether communication is any better outside of the internet, and whether it's worth it.

Oh well, I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it.

Haha, yes its true, I had that feeling about you once  :smirk:
It is extremely difficult, the attempt to communicate one idea to another person.
Between what I'm thinking
What I want to say
What I think I'm saying
What I'm actually saying
What you want to hear
What you think you're hearing
What you're hearing
What you want to understand
What you think you understand
What you actually understand
There are ten possiblities of having difficult communication.

But let's still try...

Communication is not pointless

i feel that miscommunication is to be expected. it may take more energy and time to try and convey a message, but thats ok.

it goes to show how much body language we really use, even if we're not aware of it.

do get rite now really meet were just pill on ring ring?

our communication, verbal and writtien, is inadequate to discuss reality. However, its obviously better to talk like a fool than be mute.

isnt it?

Yeha, i really wonder why i post here. I can hardly understand what most of the posters are asking half the time. And Of those times i can maybe give a small percentage of what i actually think on the subject matter.

I dont know wht the point is, maybe its cause i have nothing better to do. well, i do like talking to people.

Text is an inadequate method os expressing one's self.Even with the emotion icons it is still sometimes difficult to know what one means or how one means it since one word can have several meanings.Sometimes meanings are based on the emotion behind the words and since emotions cannot be adequately through text it becomes a breeding ground for miscommunication and misunderstanding.

Most definately sir. That was why i created this picture. It explains everything within itself, and serves to express more about me... than explaining it could ever do.

there are large amounts of threads where miscommunication does not occur at all. even those which it does occur, it only happens between minorities. the majority of the sample understands the contents.

The interchange of thoughts and ideas between two individuals is only possible between equals? If that were so none of us would be able to read this :P hehehe.
Obviously though it was not to be taken literally, and that to truly communicate with someone you have to be on the same "wave length".

I think it's interesting to watch the progression of thoughts.  Someone starts an idea, and it goes in the direction in which it's intended, or not.  Either way, the mental masturbation is just purely entertainment, for me.  If no one understands what I say, but the conversation is entertaining, I can live with that.

you ask why....

I ask why not?

yeah there's miscommunication, but it's great because we don't have tone here. it tends to have the mind be just a little more creative with syntax and diction. we don't have tone here, and with english, tone is important.

can you think of any good points about internet communication?

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

To Jellric and Spud:  I wrote in grammatically correct terms.  I was clear and concise, IMO.  What was there not to understand?

I was just IMing someone from this forum, and I told him, "I love you guys from the forum. You're all fucked up!"

I really do love this place. I have occasionally been offended or hurt by things said to me in the past, and I even once said I was going to leave here. Ped (in his infinite wisdom) explained to me that maybe I was meant to learn from this place.

So, here I am, learning from you dweebs. I seriously do love this place and you people. All of you coming-and-going-people.
