Help understanding classification
    #27013197 - 10/31/20 01:47 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Can someone please refer me to some kind of resource to better understand how mushrooms get classified?

For example, I don't understand what exactly makes all P. Cubensis that species, while they all seem fairly distinct visually, to me. I mean, clearly they are similar in some ways, but I have no grasp on what makes them that species.

Any type of media would be fine; a book, a webpage, a YouTube video, whatever you've got.

Every known mushroom species has a description, which describes certain features that
are recognizable both by the naked eye and through a microscope.

I suggest that if you want to get more familiar with how to distinguish between the
different features which characterise most mushrooms, you should try reading the
following identification key. You can go pick a few different species that you're not
very familiar with, and practice by trying to key them out, at least to genus. Very
often the tricky part is to tell the species, due to variations that can only be seen
under the microscope.

Oh heck yeah, thank you for this. I got the mushroom identification guide recommended for my area, but it doesn't go into much detail with the key. It gives some basic identifications (gills, no gills, etc.), and points you to where to find them in the book. This is a lot more information. Not sure I quite grasp the key, but I'll be reading the link in the introduction. Again, thank you.
