Mixing course wood chips with coir for king oyster substrate?
    #27013404 - 10/31/20 07:38 AM (3 years, 4 months ago)

King Oyster.

My oat grain spawn jars are long overdue and have started pinning. So I need to do something about them

I found this bag of alder wood chips in my shed that I never got to use for smoking. So I thought they could become substrate for my king oysters.

I've only grown king oyster in coir before, but had good enough results doing it in a shoe box. Here is a grow I did on coir: 50/50 grain spawn and coir.

So my question is: Since the wood chips are pretty course, should I mix the course alder wood chips with coir? Or just take the spawn directly to the wood chips?

Also: Since I am directly supplementing the chips with my grain spawn. is my thinking right that it's enough to just pasteurize the wood chips?

you can get away with pasteurizing substrate without supplementation. I think it would be a good idea to mix some coir with those chips even tho it would probably work without. the coir will let the mycelium span the gaps more easily.

I like the tub you posted, how much spawn did you use?

Sounds good, I'll mix in some coir as well to fill in the gaps.

The tub I used is 5 liter volume. The substrate is 1 liter spawn and 1 liter coir and 1 cm coir casing.

All my spawn jars had lots of pins when I opened them. So I am gonna eat the pins for dinner lol

And here is the final substrate:

1 liter alder wood chips
0.6 liter oat grain spawn
0.4 liter coir

And about 0.2 liter coir casing

I soaked the wood chips over night and then pasteurized the coir and the wood chips for 1 hour at 70 C

Nice. Make sure you dont close that lid tight. I mean make sure you have some gas exchange while it colonizes that substrate.

I've never cased but i think its more common to put the casing on once the sub has reached full colonization.

Thanks! I already checked that the lid isn't airproof.
I put some water in the bottle, closed the lid and water came out of the lid when the bottle was upside down. So GE should be ok!

The casing is a set and forget kind of thing. It is wetter than the rest of the substrate so that hopefully there will not be many side pins because of superior surface conditions on the top.

It's my first bottle grow, so I hope this works out

Thanks for the interest

My bottle is chugging along nicely. Has colonized a lot so far.

Day 5:
The myc has done a lot in just 2 days!

Day 9:
I've got a lot of side blobs. I hope they just kinda stay like that.

And on top I am starting to see some primordia in the middle. It's not very visible on the pic, but the part of the surface there looks very much like what my previous tub looked like before it started pinning.
There is also a slightly gray growth on the right side. I hope that's not mold.

Nice. If you want to promote one big fruit you can pluck out all the others once theyre big enough to knock off.

I didn't know I could promote certain pins / fruits, but it
makes sense! I wish I knew that when I did my shoebox grow earlier
because I also had a lot of fruits that were too small to do anything
with. I'm gonna try it out

I noticed your shoebox had a huge pinset. Pretty impressive especially for just coir and spawn. Did you measure BE on that grow?

Hey Krock!
Checkout this Youtube of a major KO grower in Korea!

They snip smaller ones out.

Thanks! The shoebox is from my first grow ever, so I appreciate that  I haven't measured it very closely but I weighed my harvest a couple of times and I think total harvest was at least 250 g. I don't know the weight of the sub, but maybe 2.5 kg (1 liter spawn + 1 liter coir)? So something like 10% BE (not so great lol). I had a lot of trouble rehydrating the sub so I could probably have gotten a better harvest if I had more knowledge. And if I would have plucked away some pins it would probably have helped as well.

The grow I am doing now is the same culture as the shoebox (I cloned a fruit I bought at an asian store). The agar plate I had used somehow survived a whole year without drying up. Unlike the shimeji plates I had that are now totally ugly dry orange looking things.

Cool video! I'm not sure what kind of tool they are using, but looks like something in between scissors and tweezers. And they just straight up ate the KO raw lol (is this common in korea?).

I've been thinking about how to harvest from the bottle. I should've maybe filled the bottle to the top, so it would've been easier to access. Now I might need to DIY a horizontal knife kind of tool?

well a litre of coir im estimating (based on the info you gave + the pic) is about 300 grams dry so that would put you closer to 80%. BE is calculated by wet mushrooms divided by dry sub ingredients.

I love that video. thanks for sharing it again, Inthepit.

I just read through my notes that I wrote a year ago where I noted the exact sub for the shoebox. It seems the composition is less than I remember:

0.6 liter coir + 0.6 liter spawn
0.4 liter coir casing

Coir expands like crazy. My particular coir is like this:
1 liter coir is 133.3 g dry

Does that mean I actually had 187.5 % BE? Does spawn really not count?

idk honestly. usually spawn isn't >50% of the substrate.. i think usually it is not substantial.

but in this case i would guess your .6 litres of spawn would be about 150g dry added to 133g coir = 283g

250/283 = 88%
if you dont count the casing it is 250/230 = 109%
