Day 13:
The bottle has a fuck ton of side pins. Maybe I should have compressed the substrate more when I made it.

But it doesn't seem to matter as the top has a lot of pins as well:

There is a lot of metabolites on top though, should I do something about it?
And when it comes to plucking I am not sure how many pins to leave be. The big pin in the middle should obviously stay. But I am not sure about it's closest neighbors. Do you think the big pins right next to the middle big pin could survive, or would they just be broken by the middle one? I could maybe pluck everything except the big pin in the middle and the slightly big pin at 8 o'clock.

Kings love to side pin... most of em will probably abort when they run out of room.
I would leave just the two pins you mentioned if you want them to grow to decent size

Day 14:

So I tried my best plucking out pins with tweezers. But it's really hard because they kind of disintegrate under the pressure of the tweezer and I didn't fill the bottle to the top. So I'm doing it at an awkward angle.
I also tried using a scalpel head and kind of wiggled it around there with the tweezers, which was a bit more effective. But still really hard. And I ended up bruising the selected pins caps a little. Hope they turn out alright.
edit: I also weighed the pins I removed. 34 g.

Day 15:
The big pin has grown up pretty fast. Think I have to harvest it soon as the cap is starting to flat out. Unfortunate because it's still pretty small.

It looks dry? It should get much larger if that is a qt jar or larger.

It's a 2 qt jar. You're right it might be a bit dry, I will try misting it.

Day 17: The fruit got bigger. I should harvest it now right? Since the cap is starting to concave.

I would give it another 12-24 hours to see if it keeps growing. Ostreatus is much more troublesome when it over grows and starts sporulating but kings are ok to let go a little longer IME.

Krock, sorry if I missed it but are your spawn jars just pure grains? Oats or do you add woodchips in as well?
Thanks!

If it has moisture and air it should get much larger.

Oups, I ended up harvesting it (45 g) for my pizza . I will try to let them grow longer next time. It's good to know that kings don't sporulate as heavy as the other oysters, because that's something I was a bit concerned about.
alland: My spawn jars are pure oat grain.

It is difficult to get much moisture on pure oats. I've never checked moisture capacity, but I'm sure it is not close to sawdust.

Day 22:
The new fruit got bigger Should I let it grow a bit more? When exactly are kings sporulating the most?

When the cap edge starts to flatten and turn up. It should be easy to see on the cap of the smaller one if "white dust" appears.

Day 22: Turns out the big one started sporulating right after posting this. But I let it go overnight and then harvested it on day 23.
Weight: 137 g I also accidentally pulled some small ones total 14 g.
Since the sub started looking pretty dry and I wanted another flush, I filled the bottle with water and let it sit for 3 hours. Then I drained off the excess water.
Day 24: The second biggest one started sporulating shortly after and unfortunately didn't become as thick as the big one. Weight: 41 g
Sub still looking dry, so I misted the top a lot.
Anything else I could do to rehydrate my sub? Rehydration is what I had trouble with last time I grew Kings as well. Not sure what else I could do.
