HEPA for a Flow Hood
    #27012538 - 10/30/20 05:44 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So I'm trying to round up parts for building a flow hood. Someone more experienced in building these than I able to take a look at THIS HERE HEPA FILTER And let me know if it will do the job. Seems ok to me, I've just never seen the plasticy look to one before, I've always seen metal. Seems to be great though 14x30x3 99.99% .63wg. Another reason im asking is because I've never seen one as thin as this (3 inches thick). But i know in my research i also came across i think it was astrocel ii and they are 3 inches thick and boast about being the thinest possible laminar flow hepa filter.

It will work just over size the blower a little and put a prefilter on it and your gold there is other members on here that use that type. Just prefilter and your good

Cool, thanks. And the price on this one is right for sure compared to others that is. I'll wait for maybe one more person to chime in on it that maybe has one? I'm thinking it should be fine though.

So it works as the filter ages and it's resistance increases. And its super easy to choke the intake down or stack prefilters to get to the right flow

Thank you bod for answering! Yes he is correct I messed up on my flow hood my first one had no prefilter and I screwed it up after 2 years of use and then the mover's busted some fins... Add a prefilter and over size the blower will give you longer use. Always change the prefilter when you start to see dirt I change mine every few months it cost only a few bucks and is easy to change compared to the whole hepa.

Also wire a light switch to the side of it I fucked up and did it on top not thinking now I have to use a step stool to turn my crap on ugg. I also suggest putting a outlet on the side with usb.... Charging phone, camera, microscope, alot of things.

That filter should last you about 3 years if you prefilter. For the $$ thought it's worth it!

3 years is definitely worth it for the price of this one. How long do the bigger ones last?

Thanks for the tips I already was planning on having the switch and outlet on the side but the charging ports, now those are definitely going in, thanks! Definitely wouldn't of thought of that.

I don't know how long they will last if you take care of it and use a prefilter it can last year's and years....

They make a plug in with usb ports already in it. If you ever buy a digital microscope you can use the usb to plug it in. When I redesign mine again I'm gonna do that this time. Just giving you ideas I wish I did before I finished mine. Also think about a led bar light above it. i will snap a pic of mine it makes everything nicer.

Yes I'm pretty sure if it says 99.9 just make sure you get the right flow rate... That can't really lie on those filters there is quality control from hell.

I yeah I would buy both of those there only 13" tall... You could stack them and make a pritty big filter and have a flow wall!!! Then bags and everything would be on all night long!

Yeah and i supposed it is made by HEPA corporation so I'm sure its good. Thanks for the help. Just pulled the trigger on the purchase. It will take a couple weeks to get here so next pay cheque I supposed I will buy a blower. So now do i have this right. Its 2.8 sq ft. So I would need then 280 cfm (higher you say to be sure so add some onto that 280) at the .63 resistance of the filter + another what .1-.2 for the prefilter? so .8 lets say. so I would need lets say what 320 (extra 40) cfm at .8 w.g?

Unfortunately money is tight right now so I can't really get both or else I would be going with a 24x48 trust me :/.

Your math seems right but you might wanna check with the pros there should be a form that knows this can't remember where but yes .2 for prefilter and go a little over sized you can always add a merv prefilter to choke back that blower a little. Also use 3/4 plywood the nice kind so you have a great finish on it. Then again if you look at mine I went over board and got the bf. To smooth sand it and seal it... Btw you can flip it but be very careful... It would not be smart to damage it. You could always just plex glass the outside but 13" just keep you bags low lol.

I'm talking to the seller to see if they will give me a discount on the second lol you got the gears turning and made me want to do that. fingers crossed they do it. If not though I'm not super concerned I haven't made the switch from jars to bags yet anyways so it doesn't really bother me to not be able to do bags, if i can do jars in a SAB i can do them infront of that hepa for sure!

If not just wait another week or two buy both! So serous better to buy both at that price and have the dream hood and buy a blower once then regret having one that small...

Plus I'm pritty sure big blowers are easy to find then small ones it was a PTA for me to source the blower I have. Also having that much work space would be a dream of mine. My only regret is not getting a bigger hood.

More than likely will be gone in two weeks when I get my next check. Im happy with one for now, I don't have a huge room as my "lab" anyways so smaller is sort of better for now, at least until I find a bigger place, and by then I won't be in the rut for cash I am currently in.

This blower seem like it should do the job? https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/A1DLGqnsefL.pdf

or this instead? https://www.grainger.com/product/DAYTON-OEM-Blower-1TDT8?internalSearchTerm=OEM+Blower%2C++Blower+Outlet+Shape+Rectangular%2C++Blower+Wheel+Diameter+6+5%2F16+in&suggestConfigId=8

EDIT. Going with the second blower mentioned there. Has 2 settings and im pretty sure low is perfect for the filter + pre filter and if not then high plus an extra pre or 2 will be 100% thanks for making me aware of being able to dumb down a more powerful one like that, i would of never thought of it, though i should of now that i hear it makes perfect sense to do that.
