Disturbing myc turns it more rhizo?
    #27012585 - 10/30/20 06:18 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

I have noticed that sometime i do things that make my myc more rhizo, and those things are:

- Shaking jars after ~5 days from agar input. I always shake them and usually this happens in smaller jars.

- Putting 3 transfers in same petri dish and it turn pretty aggressive as soon as the discover each other, they start to compete for space?

- Some G2G transfers also usually this works with smaller jars for me, dont ask me why

- I had a petri dish that had a slightly darker spot turning up and stayed the same size, i figgured it was some nutriuon maybe from my potato agar as i dont filter the potatoes that mush. And when myc came across the spot i growed more rhizo after eating up that little spot and looked like it turned it self to a new sector. (im a total newbie, trying to learn so bear with me)

Whats your opinion, have you noticed something like this behavior or you know other triggers?

The best one i made was putting 3 transfers in same petri dish, from my knowledge it was 3 sectors. And that turned stringy af more then 1 millimeter each string. And in substrate and now surface is filled with 2-3 millimeter thick standing rhizo strings. I got 4 boxes like that in fruiting now and a total of 8 little caps just said hello yesterday so im exited to see what resulst will be for this experiment

So seems like when myc meets obstetrical or gets disturbed it will strengthen? And/or get more rhizo?

Thank you for taking the time to reply! It means very mush to me!

I’ve noticed occasionally when I take a transfer the myc turns rhizo around the area that was cut.

Never noticed anything else that I can think of though.

The myc growth dynamic changes accross the whole plate from what I’ve observed. I’ll snap a few pics soon as I head back down. Making a batch of sub atm.

Yeah that i have noticed aswell! So the common theme is when the myc gets "challanged" it will get more rhizo like or grow faster. This is interesting

Thank you D3monic! That would be awesome! Do you take any additional transfers from the areas that have strengthen then after you notice this? To snatch up the stronger growing myc.

No, it’s just reacting to being disturbed. Don’t really think it’s going to affect it down the line. I could be wrong though, it happens often

Can see a clear line all the way around the plate, I honestly couldn’t tell you if that’s from the myc being damages and the whole colony reacting or just the temporary change of temperature and air conditions from opening the plate. I’d like to think a combination of the two

Thank you for sharing!

I see now what you mean, i have not got any collective reaction like that all around the whole plate. I would bet on fast temp shifting biggest factor to that. Thats wierd and cool

looks good, this kind of rhizo growth depends mostly on the strain and nutrients avaliability of the media mostly, less nutrients= more rhizo

One user posted that in another thread. Kind of supports the theory that it will get rhizo when challanged :P

I found that making low nutrient agar and pouring the plates really thin creates rhizo very consistently.

It really doesn’t matter though it’s mostly aesthetic. You can manipulate the same culture into rhizo or tomentose but it’s the same genetics.

To my knowledge it's just a different mycelial structure thats meant to search for food. It has a tube in the middle of it compared to like tomentose growth to help supply it with energy as it's stretching out. I've always wondered about why some mycelium just tears through grain as rhizomorphs, like based off the low nutrients promoting rhizo growth it leads me to believe that it's not interested in the grain but will eventually settle on it, if that makes any sense
