My First Grow Log (thus far)
    #27011750 - 10/30/20 09:43 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

My First Mushroom Grow Log:

Inoculated 6- 8oz pre-sterilized jars from Midwest Grow Kits with syringes of B+ and Golden Teacher from Mycelium Falcon on 10/20/2020.  I used sterile technique (gloves, alcohol, Lysol, the whole nine) with a still air box on top of my kitchen counter.  I was still trying to figure out an optimal place to put them- I tried a few places and landed on my China cabinet because it locks and because I had two hygrometers in there and everything was damn near perfect.

On 10/21/2020 I utilized the remainder of spore solution for 5 Uncle Ben’s ready rice bags.  I used the Capri Sun method for inoculation and then I cut a square out of the upper corner covered with two layers of micropore (paper) tape for air exchange.

10/27/2020- first sight of mycelium growing in jars around inoculation points.  This appeared as a frostyish area that looked almost gray at first.  When flashlight shines on it you can see the little mycelium wispys. 😍🥰

10/28/2020- first sight of mycelium in Uncle Ben’s.  It’s harder to tell because you only have window at the bottom of the bag; also have been trying not to touch the bags too much because I don’t want to bruise any mycelium that could potentially be growing underneath. I have been watching closely for contamination and so far so good!

10/30/2020-  yesterday I marked off the areas of growth on the jars with a sharpie and today you can note the changes in growth over the day.  Yayy!! Every single jar and bag has signs of appropriate and healthy growth!

Overall grow:
I have the jars and uncle bens in an old locking China cabinet in my den.  My house was built in 1870 and isn’t the easiest to keep heated.  I have been attempting to keep the heat in the house (i live in NY) set to 74 degrees.  I know for a fact that my husband has this thing auto set for 68 degrees overnight and while we aren’t home; I try to override as much as I can remember to keep it cooking in here.  So anyway- my shrooms have been exposed to temps of about 66-68 overnights for about 6 hours.. and then during the day I can ensure they’re staying right about 74-75 degrees.

I haven’t limited light at all.  I have them in the corners of my China cabinet that has a glass window in the middle.. they don’t see a lot of direct light but they aren’t in complete darkness.

I’m thinking that’s about all I can say for now.

11/05/2020 Update:

It’s been 18/19 days since inoculation.  Some things I learned so far:
They will colonize at lower temperatures but so much slowly.  I noted considerably increased growing rates with temps on the higher end of the 74-85 degree range.

Since my last post where I had suggestions for getting the heat up to speed the process a bit, I have been able to maintain them consistently over 74 degrees but I don’t like them over 84 degrees r/t bacterial growth and other contamination.

On day 14 I was doing some research about my slow growing jars and UB bags and came across shaking them.  With every issue related to mycology there is subjective content which I definitely found while scouring the interwebz for “to shake or not to shake”.  I decided I would shake up ONE jar, the jar that was seemingly 50-60% colonized already.

Day 15: Ohhhh momma! They grew really well, just over 24 hours I could totally tell.  The mycelium were coming in a wave down the jar toward the bottom, thick white mycelium making it’s rounds.  So, naturally, I shook the rest of the jars and broke up all the rice in the UB and figured “if it goes it goes, if not, oh well”.

I currently have no jars under 30% colonization, I’m thinking that they’re more colonized than I can see.  I can tell that the top of jars that have been colonized for longer are definitely starting to consolidate and become dense (like I imagine the cake will be when I take it out).

I know UB is a sort of taboo subject here but someone has got to have some experience with it.  I just don’t know how long to wait until taking it out... from the bottom all the grains are white but idk what’s above!

All in all, this has been an excellent deterrent during these last couple weeks with the election and state of our country.  I’m also reading Stamets’ ”Mycelium Running” which it’s very rich in information for the total newb like me.

Eek! I’m getting excited for the next steps, I want my babies to grow!

It's fun to see your journal on this because it reminds me of the way I started--the same jars from Midwest Grow Kits.

I can tell you this: combining the fact that you're using spore syringes and your lower temperatures, you're in it for the long-haul! It was so painful how long it took to fully colonize those jars, I think somewhere in the range of 4-6 weeks if I remember correctly. Then I had to muster the patience to wait another 1-2 weeks for consolidation!

Then there's the waiting for pinning, etc!

How do you plan to fruit them?

Thanks for your reply! Ahhh, I really hope that I don’t have to wait that long, I’m not a very patient person!! I’m going to attempt to get the heat up consistently and see if that will help. Any other suggestions?

Yeah just use a space heater/ oil in your room. That's what I use also just break those into chunks and do a bulk grow! Monotub! You might just wanna buy a cheap pc and learn oats it is worth it!

Yes- I’m planning to fruit them in monotubs.  I think I am going to do 50:50 vermiculite:perlite mixture and case with thin layer of coir.  I’m all set to do that and I am going to move them to the basement for this.  I also did purchase a little ceramic floor/space heater that I have been using to offset the temps.  I just don’t like to have it running 24/7, maybe it’s because I haven’t had enough experience with them
I get nervous about leaving it on while I’m asleep or not home.

Did you wait until they fully colonized your tubs before changing to fruiting conditions? I think I am just going to flip the lids on the tubs and let them go without a light schedule.  Any experience here? I’ve read enough about it but obviously have no first hand experience.  My tek is just gathered teks from my research and what made sense to me.  It’s great that there’s so many ways to go about it and still have success.

I am really excited about them!

Consider doing a Vermiculite/Coir mixture with no casing. Some people go out of their way to case, but usually it’s because they have a reason. Your strains won’t really benefit from a casing layer though.

I do recommend at least some light. It’s not technically necessary, but it’s easier to keep everything clean when the mushrooms are growing upward rather than horizontally along the surface.

If your temps won’t be consistent, you may run into some moisture/condensation problems as you begin approaching fruiting conditions. If condensation is dripping onto the substrate and pooling, you can just blot it up gently with a paper towel.

I think waiting longer is better, rather than going to fruiting prematurely. You’ll still get your mushrooms, but perhaps a lesser yield. You could wait until you see your first pin, then flip to fruiting conditions.

Keep us posted!

Good luck! I’d take that foil off now, as long as you have polyfil, microspore tape, or a synthetic filter disk, you should be alright taking that off, it’s only to avoid getting Water in your jars during your sterilization process.

I was wondering about that! It has been a pain in the ass to work with it on having to move it looking for growth.  Thanks for that tip! I think as a noob the one thing I read in my travels of research before embarking this journey was to stress as sterile of a tek as you can to prevent contamination (which as a nurse, I can appreciate). I’d thought about the foil before and I was like “whatever, if nothing else it’s just another barrier”.  I’m thankful to know I can remove it though. Lol!

Alright, I’m gon’ take you up on it and try verm/coir!
I plan to use a fluorescent tube light for them when I move them to the basement. Anything special? I just have a standard tube light down there now and I’m going to move it to over them when they’re down there.
I’ll be sure to keep this log updated as things change! Thanks a lot for piping in and helping a newbie out! 🥰

12 hrs on/12hrs off, try hang light above your tub, or Fruiting cage. Or atleast horizontal, light, fresh air, and proper humidity conditions trigger pinning.
