Do these BRF cakes (and SGFC setup) look correct? * 1
    #27012114 - 10/30/20 01:10 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I keep hearing that the cakes should be "glistening", but there is no visible moisture even after misting them. They are wet to the touch, and the verm layer is crumbling off which has left the mycellium cake exposed in some areas. I have 6500k lighting above the SGFC.

I birthed the cakes yesterday (4oz jars minus the top verm layer: ~3oz cake), dunked them in water for 12 or 14 hours (can't remember which), then put them in a bowl of fine vermiculite and firmly pressed it against all sides. It didn't stick well in some spots.

Please, anyone with experience, are there any red flags in the pics or description of methodology? Obviously this is my first go at it, first cakes ever! But I'm assuming I've done at least 20 things wrong and at this point am almost expecting total failure.

You'll definitely get flushes from these. Just remember to fan 3-4 times a day, and don't mist directly at the cakes, but in the direction of the walls of the tub. You don't want to see pooling water on the foil they are sitting on.

Do you have holes under the perlite?

Thank you for helping! I heard on here to moist them directly, IIRC one of the PF teks says so. But I've also seen people say not to moist directly, which makes it confusing. But I'll take your word for it and stop misting directly.

I made a few extra holes on the bottom (on top of the usual amount) to make sure there was sufficient air flow to dehydrate the water. Should I mist every time I fan it (3-4/day)? Also, is temperature an issue? The temps here are low, ~70, should I heat the room the SGFC is in?

Misting directly on the cakes won't really hurt them at the beginning, but I don't prefer it because as pins form, you don't want water accumulating on the pins and caps that are forming.

In my experience, you can mist each time you fan since you're not misting the cakes directly. And, since you have good holes drilled for FAE, misting after each fanning seems like a good idea.

Your temperature range is good. Mid to mid-high 70s is ideal, but definitely don't use a heating pad. That creates more problems than it's worth.

Looks pretty good!

A couple things thou....make sure the SGFC is elevated off the floor so it has airflow going up into it. Also, it looks like u are heavily misting in there. U want your cakes moist not soggy-wet. So watch out for over-misting. Mist as needed when they need water and dont overdo it. And I find fanning to be unnecessary. I never fan and they fruit just fine for me.
