Advice from someone with more experience please. This is my first year looking for libs but not finding any yet (apologies if these questions are stupid):

1 - If I'm finding loads of other mushrooms is that a good indication of there possibly being libs in the area?

2 - Will libs grow amongst other mushrooms, nearby or completely random?

3 - How tall is the grass that they prefer /how tall is the grass that they don't grow in?

I've been out about 5 times in the last 2 weeks and not seen a thing (Suffolk area) I realise that they could just be late coming here...or maybe I hope they're late.

1. I take it as a good sign, but whether it guarantees that you'll find libs is debatable. I rather take it as a good initial sign that a field might be worth checking out.

2. Yes, they will. I've seen them both fruiting right next to and randomly among other mushrooms.

3. Generally speaking, I like to look within tufts of tall-ish grass. I've seen them growing from short grass many times though. Look for areas of grass that are browned/ yellow'd out..This means that these patches of grass are dying and libs primarily rely on nutrients from decaying/ rotten grass roots.

Suffolk might be a late starter. What elevations are you getting to?

Hi JayBizz

If you look at the very bottom of page 42 of this thread there's a video I posted which I found on YouTube. It is superb and should really help you out. That guy does some good videos.

Another day with no finds.  Heading higher tomorrow.

Lots of rain and weather looks like temperatures might drop next week.

Thanks ruddy_nora! Hoping that I just need to get out more. The elevations I've been looking at are between 50 - 200ft amsl. Does it really make a big difference in the south east?

Second hunt today. I went up to a high moor; approx 500m. I found lots of mushrooms, but no libs. Very wet, peaty ground, with some lookalikes that gave me false hope. All good practise though.

Anyone know what these are? I thought they were liberty caps but after doing further research I’m skeptical. Some people say they are and some don’t believe so. Since I started drying they’ve become a whitish/purple on the spores. I picked them because of the nipple on top which I thought was a prominent feature of libs. They are pretty small and the stalks are also thin. Any help would be appreciated!

None of those a liberty caps, sorry bud. They grow in similar locations I find them while around libery caps all the time.

Gills are all wrong (they should not be white and the skirt should be dark not light) also stalk is to straight and thin (should be curvy and a bit more chunky)

Cheers JayBizz

It's great for showing the types of grass that they like and how they tend to hide in the little tufts (which in my limited experience they absolutely do)!

Not easy to spot the little buggers, especially when they're wet.

Today I found another patch in the same field. 14g wet in a couple of minutes.

How many "patches of dreams" do I need to make a "field of dreams"? Conditions 2, 3 & 4 already met

just got back from a long walk - success! Was up at about 300m to 350m in sheep grazing land.  Quite sporadic but about 60 were had.  Made up! Only took 5 days and about 55 miles! Temperature was 13 deg C and its been raining for about a week solid.

Lafullerx, I see those mushrooms a lot, the libs are a lot more robust when you pick them and have the darker gills underneath.

going to have to look into the honey!

Disappointing trip up the hills today. They are just not out in numbers at all in a spot that has been very fruitful in the past. Managed to pick around 30.

I may make one last trip next week before I call it a day. Hope you guys had more luck than me.

Snapped this picture of a really good specimen to help any newcomers with ID. I think this is a good example of a fresh liberty cap .

Anyone in the west midlands? There's a field (a recreation ground!) near my house, surprisingly, in Birmingham, which yields extremely sparsely - I might find 2 or 3 here and there searching quite hard (and lots of lookalikes which have fooled me before). Is this likely to just be how it is there, or am I early/late for the season?

It's incredibly wet there too this year, very marshy in places.

It's very difficult to know. Where I've been searching, it's like as if a large flush peaked over about a fortnight or so, then a steep decline over a couple of days. So much so that an hour's scout at known spots yesterday yielded just a couple of rotten ones.

The only observations I can come up with regarding the conditions is that relative humidity dropped from the 90s to 82 for a few days just before the local flush ended, as did barometric pressure. I've no idea whether these factors make a difference, but am keeping an eye.

Conditions seemed perfect right through this period and still are - low temperatures, plenty of rainfall, etc. And yet I hear they're everywhere about 30 miles north of here.

So it's like each area or sub-area goes through cycles of flush, and maybe not every year. I'm beginning to wonder do individual mycelial colonies only really flush every couple of years?

Anyway, because conditions are so perfect at the moment (NW Ireland), I think it would be premature to give up altogether. I'm going to try different spots and keep up the hunt til the first frosts and see can I catch another flush or two. So far, it's definitely been the best season I've encountered since 2013, but I wonder is a lot of that down to luck and timing...
