Theory about spawn/substrate ratio and mushroom size
    #27011011 - 10/29/20 07:07 PM (4 years, 2 months ago)

So, I have a theory that I'm going to try out in the future. I really love the nice, big mushrooms that have character. It really sucks to grow out a tub and on the first couple flushes you get hundreds of small to medium fruits.

This happens even with Orissa which should have enormous fruits. In the past and in most of my grows, I've used 1:1 to 1:2 spawn/substrate ratio and have gotten a total mess of hundreds of small fruits. However, later flushes always seems to bring the monsters I love to look at.

This brings me to my theory that if you used a ratio more like 1:5 spawn/substrate, you would get the more larger canopies. I've gotten some beautiful flushes in the past, but by accident.

Experiment!

It definitely sounds logical. More space for mycelium to grow would let it choose how it wants to organize itself and make large clusters rather than have a bunch of small clusters forced together. I usually have the opposite problem- a couple big mofos and low fruiting density. Probably because I use low quality substrate and really like it cold and the time it takes to finally fruit lets them make all the associations necessary for the big guys. Only one way to find out!

P.s. my biggest guy came from mixing two varieties- inoculating the respective spawn and mixing when adding sub. I feel like the mixing creates “desserts” where incompatible mycelium are present, preventing fruiting, but feeding the hot spots where a sufficient amount of compatible genetics reside. :alert:  More testing is necessary ⚗️🧬
