Been watching a weird show on Amazon Prime (Fortitude) and "muscimol" becomes a part of the story. Per wiki:
Quote:
Muscimol (also known as agarin or pantherine) is one of the principal psychoactive constituents of Amanita muscaria and related species of mushroom. Muscimol is a potent, selective agonist for the GABAA receptors[citation needed] and displays sedative-hypnotic, depressant and hallucinogenic psychoactivity. This colorless or white solid is classified as an isoxazole.
The effects of the muscimol begin 30–120 minutes after consumption and last for 5–10 hours.[citation needed] These include euphoria, dream-like (lucid) state of mind, out-of-body experiences and synesthesia.[citation needed] Negative effects include mild to moderate nausea, stomach discomfort, increased salivation and muscle twitching or tremors. In large doses strong dissociation or delirium may be felt.[citation needed]
Many of muscimol's effects are consistent with its pharmacology as a GABAA receptor agonist, presenting many depressant or sedative-hypnotic effects. Atypical of the effect profile of sedative drugs generally however, muscimol, like Z-drugs, can cause hallucinogenic changes in perception. The hallucinogenic effect produced by muscimol is most closely comparable to the hallucinogenic side effects produced by some other GABAergic drugs such as zolpidem
In the show they talk about how reindeers consume the mushrooms, and then the reindeer urine is saved and consumed by reindeer herders and used as a hallucinogen. Then I remembered hearing about this somewhere along the line as a real thing. So I did a little research, and yeah, apparently it is.
Quote:
Reindeer go to great lengths to seek out the hallucinogenic fly agaric mushroom (Amanita muscaria) and eating the fungi makes them behave drunkenly, run about aimlessly and make strange noises. Head twitching is also common. Fly agaric mushrooms have long been used by man for their psychotropic properties but can be toxic. Reindeer can eat them without harm and having observed their effects on their livestock, reindeer herders in Europe and Asia have long collected reindeer urine as a safer way of taking this hallucinogen.

I'm assuming those on this earth who have actually drank reindeer urine laced with amanita muscaria is a pretty short and special list (lol), but I was just wondering...have any of you heard of this? Or actually heard about people who have done this?

interesting history of Christmas, though of course some don't believe, they also offer no other explanations of the wacky Christmas traditions.

SantaClaus dressed in red and white comes down chimney leaving gifts- amanita shamans dressed in red and white (to honor the colors of amanita), sometimes when snow covered the doors, or maybe to conserve heat in their huts, they would come in threw a 'chimney hole' in the roof of huts, delivering mushrooms.
flying reindeer- flying is often reported sensation from amanita consumption.. reindeer like to eat amanitas, so people see them eating and thus flying reindeer.
decorated Christmas trees- amanitas are found in pine forests.. after harvesting, mushrooms were decoratively hung on tree branches.
elves - that one is obvious.

some came singing, some come to play, some come for keeping the dark away
