Video: How to find good cell phone service while camping in the middle of nowhere

A few minutes ago I made a video which shows you how to use three free Android apps to find campsites with a strong cell phone signal, allowing you to upload mushroom photos and videos from the middle of nowhere.
I use Cellmapper to find cell phone towers - in Cellmapper you can select the Open Streep Map layer which shows national forests and other features of interest to campers and mushroom hunters. Once a general area is chosen, Network Cell Info lite is used to map out the cell phone signal strength as you drive around, so you can locate a nice camp site with strong signal. This app also shows you the signal strength in real time, so once you find a campsite you can find the best spot to place the phone. Finally, Open Signal is used to see how fast the internet is in any given location.

Helpful video thanks Alan!
Off topic question but do you have a good method for finding free legal camp sites? You mentioned BLM LAND in the vid. I’m aware of that resource. How did you know the more nuanced areas like the open space you found in the vid?

Really depends on where you are. In Michigan for example, you can camp in any state forest, and there is a website which shows the exact boundries of all of them - in the northern part of the state you are rarely more than a few miles from legal camping areas.
National forests are a good bet, I use OpenStreetMaps.com to find those.
This is the page to find BLM land, and it also is good at locating property owners for various other places.
If you can fit your tent and sleeping stuff in a backpack, you can renegade camp almost on almost any government owned property as long as you can find a spot to put your vehicle that doesn't tip anyone off. A lot of government land doesn't allow camping, but rangers don't often work at night, nor do they go off trail often.
Occasionally there are good leads on http://freecampsites.net
