I don't know - Scriabin was fucking out there... sonically, theoretically and compositionally he composed some of his songs specifically to trigger the apocalypse when they're played by 4 pianos at the top of the Himalayas.
"Theosophist and composer Dane Rudhyar wrote that Scriabin was "the one great pioneer of the new music of a reborn Western civilization, the father of the future musician", and an antidote to "the Latin reactionaries and their apostle, Stravinsky" and the "rule-ordained" music of "Schoenberg's group."[35] Scriabin developed his own very personal and abstract mysticism based on the role of the artist in relation to perception and life affirmation. His ideas on reality seem similar to Platonic and Aristotelian theory though much less coherent. The main sources of his philosophy can be found in his numerous unpublished notebooks, one in which he famously wrote "I am God". As well as jottings there are complex and technical diagrams explaining his metaphysics. Scriabin also used poetry as a means in which to express his philosophical notions, though arguably much of his philosophical thought was translated into music, the most recognizable example being the Ninth Sonata ("the Black Mass").
Keys arranged in a circle of fifths in order to show the relationship with the visible spectrum in Scriabin's variant of synesthesia

Though Scriabin's late works are often considered to be influenced by synesthesia, a condition wherein one experiences sensation in one sense in response to stimulus in another, it is doubted that Scriabin actually experienced this.[36][37] His colour system, unlike most synesthetic experience, accords with the circle of fifths, which tends to prove it was mostly a conceptual system based on Sir Isaac Newton's Opticks.
Scriabin did not, for his theory, recognize a difference between a major and a minor tonality of the same name (for example: C-minor/C-Major). Indeed, influenced also by the doctrines of theosophy, he developed his system of synesthesia toward what would have been a pioneering multimedia performance: his unrealized magnum opus Mysterium was to have been a grand week-long performance including music, scent, dance, and light in the foothills of the Himalayas Mountains that was somehow to bring about the dissolution of the world in bliss. "
Glenn Gould is great too of course.

What can I say, those 4 chords are pretty popular
There's something special about 4 in music. Take Electronic Dance Music. A lot of EDM and Pop music is on a 4/4 beat scale. Its where the term Four on the Floor. I cant help but think theres a connection between 4/4 beats and the 4 chord pattern seen in a lot Popular music.
"94% were in 4/4". 94 reduced down using Numerology is "4". Coincidence? I think not.

This is just a side effect of how music works. It's like saying that all paintings tend to use red, green, and blue. There are only so many notes and so many chords. It's more about how the chords are arranged or modified, what happens before and after, and stuff like that. Just like in painting, it's not just about the fact that a painting has blue in it, it's about what the painting does with that blue.
The real reason why a lot of modern music sounds the same has more to do with the music industry and how it's run than anything. They don't care about the music, they care about making money. So they put out generic sounding crap written by a team of people with no real taste or skill or care, and then they market it into success. Putting out something unusual would be risky, so they don't. And if you had something unusual that was successful, it might make your other artists look bad or sell less, so you have no incentive to do that.
In addition, a lot of times the people managing the bands and deciding what their music is going to be/sound like have no idea what the fuck they're doing and really suck. They're some corporate asshole in a suit who think they know everything, and they tell the band what to do, and force the bad to make the music a certain way, and it sucks, and no one buys it, but the band can't say or do anything because they signed a contract saying this asshole gets to make them do whatever he wants.

Noonman, it's the progression and style the chords are played that makes it the same. BB king said it's not the notes, it's the spaces between the notes that matter
So many people love that 4 chord progression that invokes those feelings of joy,, overcoming some sort of strife, finding ones self, loving life, going out with the crew, finding the right motivation and what ever else ppl want spoon fed to them.

That's it hey. You don't see ugly people in the spotlight who make fantastic music anymore. It's all about the image and the marketability of a product. The meritocracy of music is dead now.
As always it's not what you do but how you do it. Some people can play a single note on an instrument and make it have feeling, 4 chords opens up a myriad of possibilities. But that's not the way of the modern day.

Very good points. It really comes down to "what melody is going to be most popular and make the most money in the end?". It really comes down to making that money, the thing that drives all large industries really.

Good stuff twighead. I sometimes wonder what I would play had I never much music or any music and just started playing (drums/percussion). I love college radio and new music.
