Growing too many mushrooms?

I just started growing again and realized that I have the potential to grow pounds of mushrooms. More than I would ever want to trip on.
Or... I can just stick to growing a few ounces a year and space out my trips accordingly.
I've been obsessed with growing mushrooms before and it was fun, and I learned a lot but its such a meaningless hobby.
I don't want mushroom growing to be the center of my life again as Im trying to get into drawing/animation.
I see members on here growing pounds and pounds of mushrooms and I don't understand what they can possibly do with them...
Lets say you harvest 8 ounces from 2 monotubs. Thats 200 grams thats 40 5 gram trips
Thats enough to trip every week for nearly an entire year

You can always vacuum seal them, or otherwise put them in long term storage. I think some people who grow a huge amount do that just so that they have a good long term supply and don't have to grow all the time. 40 5 gram trips might only last 4-5 years, and that's if you're not tripping very frequently.
That might sound like a long time, but you'd be amazed at how quickly 5 years can pass, and then suddenly you're out and back to square one. So I can easily see why someone would want to grow a ton and then put it all in long term storage so they don't have to grow anymore.
Then there are some people who are growing absolutely massive amounts, and they're clearly not for purely personal use, but that's relatively rare. Mushrooms don't bring in any real money, the demand and price are both very low, so someone selling large amounts is very rare.

I used to just throw away the mediocre and keep those of special quality. Even in an airtight jar they degraded after a few years though (psilocin I think) so that may be a reason people keep at it.
The whole culture and social hierarchy (becoming a TC lord) of mush cult can for some be an incentive in itself so some peeps may feel compelled to continue growing endless amounts of psycho-actives either to earn their stripes/improve or just simply to belong.
I personally loved the hobby but it was ruined by the paranoia that came with it, so I don't want it in my life anymore especially with a family to consider now. I agree people do get carried away with it though in more ways than one!

I'd say just grow once a year. You should get enough to last you until your next grow.
I still have batches from over a year ago. But I trip every month or every few months so I don't go through it all that fast.

Grow them as you need them. If you want to preserve them for the long term freezing tea works really well - I've thawed it out after as much as 3 years with no changes in potency at all...
Personally when I do tripping research work or writing it leads to tripping multiple days a week, so after a while it's up to massive amounts - in which case I'm really glad when I grew pounds and preserved them all.

I hear that (cracker dry) they'll last in the vacuum sealed bags for many years with zero loss of quality. Even 5 or 10 years.

I can believe that too, but I've not proven it for myself.

Neither have I, sadly, but one day perhaps I'll try it.

Store in glass mason jars for best longevity.
I've stored dry mushrooms this way for 5 years with no loss in potency, that I could tell.
But they really have to be cracker-dry! Keep them somewhere cool and dark and don't open the jars until you need to. Oxygen and light are your enemies. But mostly oxygen.

No, maybe they're fine, but I think glass has to be better at keeping oxygen out than plastic bags, for long-term storage.
If its going to be sitting for years I'd use glass jars.
If already sealed in vacuum bags, just put the bags in a big glass jar, that's what I'd do, to be extra safe.

OP, if you have too many shrooms, perhaps experiment with making different shroom edibles or even a chemical extraction

FWIW I'd rather have a surplus than the alternative.
That said, I don't think I've ever had what I could call an excessive amount stored - when the urge hits I always want to be able to satisfy it.

It's got too much before for me before and I've thrown away massive amounts of dried shrooms. I won't sell them and if I gave them to someone they might find out I grow... so in the bin they go.
