Yeah, my town is ~85m above sea level, never really found anything around the immediate area. I've only had luck in the hills!
What you're saying is encouraging. As I said, on my first visit I found none at all. Admittedly, I didn't check the fields that were a bit further back...That's where I had luck on my second trip. This environment is ideal for libs, parts of the field are boggy so the moisture levels are great even without rain. I just think it needs that extra boost that rain can give to see the big flushes happen. I've picked hundreds and hundreds of libs from this spot over the years so I know it has the potential!

Did some research on soilscapes, drove up to the peak district today. Up at 300m, in a North facing meadow. Acid soil. Most of them look mature. Sizes range from approx 5-15cm. They are dark brown, wet but not slimy so not convinced they are Liberty caps, as most the pics on this thread show lighter coloured caps, but would be interested in your opinions. Have I struck lucky?

Hi Bontempi, looks like you might have collections of inactive Panaeolus (maybe P. papilionaceus complex). Your photos remind me of what used to be called P. retirugis. They're beautiful grassland mushrooms, even if non-active... R_D

rud_dudl thanks for your reply. I think you're right with Panaeolus.
Are mine safely edible?
The Panaeolus fimicola is listed as active. Mine are slightly darker though.

so altitude is important? I can go higher on my next hunt, 400 to 500m.

It's not essential, but best to start at higher altitudes imo.

Those look Like panaeolus acuminatus too me, Otherwise known as the DewDrop MottleGill. I Mistaken a load of them as Liberty caps last year, then I found out that they tend too grow near Liberty caps, In the same Locations. I picked a couple hundred of them and From what I read they can contain tiny amounts of Psychedelic Compounds but not enough too do anything And there also slightly toxic apparently but will only make you slightly ill and not cause death. Don't eat them, the psychedelic species of the panaelous are quiet rare, but there definitely not them. I may be wrong with my identification but I am pretty sure that is what you have but I would advise with getting a few peoples opinions on it. There may be a chance for liberty's too be growing near though so it's worth a check. Higher Altitude is better for earlier in season as It's much cooler temperatures.

With altitude it's just that it gets colder first up higher and libs like it below 10 at night to really start fruiting. My question is can it be to wet? Got 18g from my usual spot last Thursday, went again today thinking it would be good as it has been raining for the last few days, only found 5 libs but the ground was very wet plus the temperature has crept above 10 at night again. Anyone else had much joy in the magical forest which is not old.?

I mean, I personally think moisture is really important. If the temps are right and you've had, say, a week or so of consistent rainfall, I'd expect to find loads.

Hi Bontempi, I wouldn't eat them if I were you, probably not tasty and mildly toxic. Claudius' suggestion that they are P. acuminatus is a good guess. R_D

Interesting, but they don't look like our psilocybe semilanceata friends from this part of the world. I thought I read somewhere nobody had ever managed to cultivate P. semilanceata?
i thought the same but gonna believe. see odd one like that in wild. after cleaning up plates, maybe isolating strain and with all the protection from being cultivated, virtually free from competition and sheltered, defo possible. plus conicr's thumbs up's worth something

Ive been slightly confused this year down in the South East. The spot that produced for me early October last year has produced barely anything for me this year. Im not sure if its been the inconsistent weather but Iām only finding a solitary mushroom, no large flushes. Is anyone else finding the same as me and is it possible that the season will kick on later than usual. Heres one that I found anyway.
I've had a similar experience with the South East, where a field which had ~500 last year and I only picked 100 from one flush, this year had 1 lib mid October. They're scattered around so are fruiting, just only one or a few in each area. Hopefully for those limited to the South East it's just a late season due to the mild weather.
I now generally follow the rule of not returning or at least not relying on the same spot twice. I've been picking less than 10 years years so perhaps a field eventually returns to it's former glory, from what I've seen even when picking only a few or none at all the following season the field can have less liberty caps and other mushrooms begin to take over.
