Side Pinning, Bods unmodified Tubs

Any tips to reduce side pinning? I see to have a lot of water droplets around the sides/edges of the tub. I have just been using the lid flipped upside down in a 54qt sterlite container with 2 quarts of spawn and 6qts of coir.

I tend to tamp down the sides all around the tub fairly tight so that it's harder for the mycelium to grow there and leave the rest of the tub in the middle slightly tamped.
I think that the mycelium will try to grow towards the path of least resistance.
Now straying away from Bods wonderful Tek, people add a 'liner' to the substrate and that helps with pinning apparently.
I get a few side pins but nothing unmanageable. I pack that shit tight and it's been good for me so far!

I see, I thought about trying that. Thanks a lot for the suggestion! Also another question. Do you layer the grains then a layer of coir etc or do you just mix the grains and coir evenly?

I mix it all together, tamp sides and then top it off with enough coir to cover the grain+coir mixture but nothing heavy. Just enough to minimize the sight of the grains. I usually tamp the sides down again afterwards to hopefully discourage side growth.
Also I've left the tub without a top layer added for a few times just because I had other use for the coir. That process went just as well. I basically do the top layer for the peace of mind and hope that the little extra moisture will embody bigger fruits!

I pre drill a hole in the bottom corner of the tub and put duct tape over it so I can drain my tubs when water builds if, if necessary. I also will use a liner to avoid side Pinning or under Pins.

OK that makes sense. Thanks! Also, what are the proper surface conditions for the unmodified tub? How do I tell if it needs misting or if I should leave it alone?

Microbeads off water should cover the entirety of the substrate
Once you see pins you can start increasing the FAE as the uneven surface will help retain more moisture.

Thanks BOD 🙏

Thanks for your help. So it needs microbeads of water the entire time its in a monotub, or should I only start misting when I see mycelium take over the top or the reverse?

The microbeads will only be present once mycelium has formed. I don’t think you should mist until after 100% colonization, which should only take about a week or so if your spawn and substrate are good.
The thing with BOD’s unmodified tek is that it’s up to you to determine how your environmental conditions affect the tubs. I’m still figuring my conditions out, but right now I keep the lid unflipped (with the seal removed) until a few days after 100% colonization. After that I will flip/unflip the lid to keep the beads up but prevent water from pooling. Then, once the tub gets closer to pinning I’ll start misting it once or twice a day.
Until you get it dialed in you can do what I’ve done which is to transfer the block to a tub larger than the one you’re using. It might sound sketch but once colonized the block is very sturdy. Of course this isn’t preferable, but if you’ve got a bunch of side pins it’s better than them getting fucked imo.
