Is pasteurizing substrate necessary?
    #27007919 - 10/28/20 09:12 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Hi

I see more and more YouTube videos where people pasteurize their substrate, but I also see a lot that don't do it. Can someone explain why some are doing it and others are not?

It depends on what is being used as substrate. For cubensis, coir + verm is the substrate of choice, partially due to the fact that pasteurization is unnecessary. I just use warm water from the tap, bring to field capacity, and there ya go!

If using any nutrient rich substrates, such as ones with manure, pasteurizing is absolutely necessary,

Got it. So it's really about the type of mushroom you want to grow?

Not necessarily. It’s about what substrate you are trying to grow on.

Most mushrooms can be grown on a wide variety of substrates, so it’s just dependent on what you choose to use.
