Wax paper quest?

I’m following willly myco’s mini mono tub tek and it’s working at great so far. I have my tub in fruiting conditions the tub looks like a snow day. I was watching his regular mono tub videos (my initial plan was not to do shoe boxes but just a 66qt mono tub but 2 of my 6 rye berry jars made it). Anyway on the mono tub video he puts wax paper over is colonized substrate. He says it promotes better pinning. In the mini mono videos he doesn’t do that wax paper. My question is I have one tub in the fruiting stage and another tub I just put together yesterday. Should I try putting wax paper over my 2nd tub colonized substrate? I was just thinking of trying it to see if there is a difference when comparing the 2 tubs. I just don’t wanna put the wax paper over the substrate and mess it up. Thanks 😊 🙏🏼

I think its a good opportunity to learn about casing layers and top layers
A casing layer is a non nutritious layer added to the top of the substrate and its purpose is to maintain a nice microclimate at the pinning surface. Generally this casing layer is made up of peat, vermiculite, oyster shell, and moss all properly pasteurized.
Some species require a casing layer in order for it to fruit properly. Cubes however do not require such a layer.
Here we use what is referred to as a "top layer" which is just layer of coir over top of your mixed substrate. This accomplishes the same thing as a casing, maintaining a nice microclimate at the pinning surface. Really what we are looking for as well is to prevent the top from drying out in the time it takes to colonize, knot/pin/fruit.
the wax paper casing is a kind of dated method from what I have seen around here, I think most will recommend you just use a top layer or true casing layer on your tubs.
I wouldn't just try it to try it either, post some pics of your tubs and get some feedback on surface conditions. That will be the determining factor on if you should case now or not

When spawning just set aside 1.5qt of the sub mix. Mix in your spawn and level and LIGHTLY pack it down, then use the left over 1.5qt of sub mix to cover this as a "casing layer". Then level it off good and give a light misting. This light misting should carry it until pins start forming, at which point you might need one or 2 more mistings. I do this and I run enough tubs you would freak.
