Here is a link to a walmart listing for 10 lbs of bulk 50/50 substrate for 69.99, seems a bit pricey but was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this stuff...

I didn’t click on that but I’m sure it’s not sold by Walmart.
Also, that cost is astronomical.

Get a brick of coir and add water. It'll cost you 3-5 bucks...

yeah I thought the same thing, that is why I didnt buy! I was mainly just surprised walmart even carries something for growing dung-loving mushrooms...

I've been a strict  bucket tek (bash me all you want for using this tek, BUT it works!) coir grower for years but recently been purchasing a lot of different genetics and wanted to run some trials of side by side isolations in coir vs dung, or straw to see the differences with my own eyes. but nowhere for me to acquire locally as i live in a big city. So i am shopping around for straw and poo right now!

3 horse stables near me are on Craigslist giving manure away. Bring your own tote/pickup truck.

Collecting dung is for beetles. Buy some coir. Its dirt cheap because its dirt.

just an idea, pre chopped straw is sold labled as pet bedding at lots of stores, pet stores specifically and probably online. I get 10$ bags locally that say 10 cu ft expanded 2 cu ft compressed. It comes perfect to use no chopping required.  If you're not making huge straw logs for oysters its a good deal. I use it in my mono tubs. I know its anecdotal but in my situation it definitely increases the size of fruits considerably

I've been writing down all my yields recently for different mixes and ratios of home depot cowpoo compost, field aged hpoo, straw, and coir+gypsum.

for me straw/poo/coir+gypsum tub total yields are only slightly better than coir+gypsum after multiple flushes. only been keeping track for about a month but with a lot tubs.
best yields ive had all came from coir+Gpsum/cowpoo tubs which I did not expect plus cowpoo is $1.50  for 1cu ft bag but needs all the rocks, sticks,  and plastic chunks sifted out.

The only signifigant differences Ive found for me are that the mixes without any cpoo or straw did a little worse. Having straw or cpoo in the mix makes bigger mushrooms but contaminate sooner which just makes it about the same yields as coir in the end. hpoo doesnt make really any diff but its free.

The little bit of everything mix does do better than coir but its close enough a few killer coir tubs would make it a tie. I will continue using some of everything because its cheaper than coir. Coir gets boring plus I fuckin dig this mycology shit so its all fun for me and worth it. Which i'm assuming is the same reason you're posting this.

I don't measure any of it at all I just mix together about 3-4 5gal buckets worth and spawn a few tubs at once all with same spawn ratio+same clone culture to get some meaningful data. Writing it all down was the best decision in a while. I write down the yeild/substrate/spawn ratio/date spawned/and date harvested it helps a lot to figure out what works better in my situation.

If you really enjoy cultivating its hella worth the little extra work

I imagine he’s aware and yet OP wants to experiment. I’ve also never heard of wild sourced cubensis choosing to grow on decomposing coconuts.

Thanks for the lengthy reply, john. All of that was very helpful for me. I didnt realize the straw had been right next to the damn coir at the pet store i used to buy my coir from this entire time!

Also your observed data really helps my itch of curiousity, and i see how your conclusions make sense based on the fact that subs other than coir contam relatively faster... Makes sense to me how youre seeing the coir just a little behind in harvest weight but kinda making up for its lacking by allowing more flushes! very interesting!!

My bad. Didn't see his post about wanting to experiment.
