They want to reward regulars and get extra from people who are just passing through (travelers or those who think they dont need the card)

They use it to track purchases and adjust prices so they can tell how many diapers they are selling on a friday night and what other purchases that customer is buying. Then they build customer profiles and feed it into algorithms to get price elasticity and a bunch of other maths.

Kroger sends targeted coupons based on prior purchases.
I get them for a “free dozen eggs”
My girlfriend gets free Ben and Jerry’s as a “Best Customer Reward”.

Lol what kind of conspiracy do you think this is? Just give me a rundown of your worst case scenario... you get 30% off a 2 liter of coke, and then what happens?

Worst case scenario:
You buy a case of mason jars, a roll of aluminum foil and a pound of brown rice flour, and a stack of razor blades, and a box of condoms at the store.
Info gets in the hands of some curious store employe who mentions to your (parents / wife / police officer)
This person stops by to see if you are OK, and peeks in your window.
Uncomfortable situation all because of data mining...

OK, that's not worst case scenario.
Lets say someone else commits a murder with the same rope you got in your cart.
Now since you used your loyalty card there is a false evidence trail.
You end up in prison for a crime you didn't commit.

I have noticed a great deal of items beyond the “best by” dates still on the shelves.
They used to keep up with the freshness better during surplus times.

Also, investigate 311.

I always target stuff that goes 40-50% off that I use. Stock up big time.

Also run 2 loyalty cards for the same supermarket. As time goes by they keep edging up how much they want me to spend to save $$$ and the the unused one gets better and better deals. Then I swap over, milk the unused one till the deals become shit and the emails trying to tempt me back on the other card become daily, then swap again... fuck em at their on game.

A conspiracy implies a secret agenda going on. By law, Supermakets have to show their price for goods for members (Loyalty card) and non-members (everyone else). No conspiracy here my friend

this thread inspired me to get a pc optimum card, im not really sure how it works, I thinks its something stupid like I have to go on thier website and pick what im going to buy, then I get the points for buying those things I picked when I scan the card at the register, I cant just go buy random things and get the points, it kinda goes against my morals of companies tracking what I do/buy and stuff, but i could really use the discounts when I rake up a bunch of points cause I buy a lot of stuff at the grocery store, this november im going to get $30 from my creditcard cause I get 1% cashback at grocery/pharmacy purchases and 0.5% cash back on all other purchases, over the last 12 months that added up to $30, and I havnt payed a penny of interest cause I have always payed the card off within 30 days, so I dont know how they can give people cash back, I have to imagine the majority of people with the card is paying interest
