Oyster mushrooms grown via Uncle Ben Tek - Not fruiting
    #27002759 - 10/25/20 01:27 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

I've got a few fully colonised bags of ready-cooked microwave rice (Uncle Ben Tek), fully colonised with Oyster mushrooms.

As they were ready to fruit I cut a few 1" holes in the bags. It has been 4 (Maybe 5) days now, and there is no sign of any activity.

What am I doing wrong, or am I just being impatient?

Thank you

Here you go mate. Not the worlds best pictures I'm afraid. There's been absolutely no change in anything since cutting those holes.

I haven't heard of this tek before, how do you know it is fully colonized?

When did you spawn the bags?

Are these just inoculated white rice or something?

I guess, if it doesn't smell funky at all, just wait

What you're doing wrong is using Uncle Bens which is a terrible idea that is never going to work well no matter what you do.

Hehe, sometimes learning the hard way is part of the fun.

I've grown spawn from canned homony before, in the can. It worked but not consistent enough to be a viable option for me.

Starting somewhere is better than not starting at all imo, just learn from it all

If there's any time that stupid tek might work, it would be with oysters.  As long as the moisture is right and it's not all mashed up I bet it could work.  Good luck!

Have some medicinal mushrooms and want to get the most out of them?  Try this double extraction method.

Ive seen this tek on youtube. While it is kinda stupid and more of just a fun experiment.. it does work. The issue could be that its pretty much impossible to see if its colonized or not. Just get some qt jars and use grain next time haha. Uncle bens ready cooked rice baga arent exactly cheap.

I spawned them on the 26th of September. The bags have a little viewing window and are transparent on the underside, so you can get a good idea with that.
It's bags of ready-cooked microwave brown rice, inoculated with Oyster spores?

It smells as a block of Oyster mycelium (Is there a proper name for that?) should; mushroomy. I've, as of yesterday, removed the micropore tape covering the air vent on the top, just to help with FAE. Since doing this I can tell with certainty that it is 100% colonised.

Well, I've seen plenty of examples of it working, whether it be for Cubensis or gourmet mushrooms.

Cheers mate, do you have any idea why there's been absolutely 0 activity since I've tried to start fruiting? Looking at the tag, it's actually been a week, with nothing.
Also, I just read your write up on a medicinal mushroom double extraction, and have some questions if that's okay? I've been planning on doing one myself. I was wondering, what weight of dried material would you say is good to take twice daily, of these mushrooms:
Reishi
Cordyceps Sinensis
Lions Mane
Chaga

Just so I can work out how much to use for X-amount of liquid extract. Cheers mate

Having removed the micropore tape in the top corner, and viewing through the viewing panel and underside, I can tell they are 100% colonised.
I'm using Co-Op's own bag rice, something like 75-pence a bag. I do have glass jars and also some "unicorn" grow bags and such, but I'm saving them for a truffle grow.

I mean, I mind as well give this horse one last kick, obviously this isn't a preferred method of any kind...but it's still possible.  What kind of environment are you putting these in for "fruiting conditions"?

Generally mushroom cultivators use grain to spawn to substrate. In the case I presented I had used WBS (spawn)and just sprinkled it on a boiled phone book (substrate). I boiled the phonebook then let it cool down enough to handle it, but still steaming, and put the book in the grocery bag and tied the bag shut. Then once it cooled down to room temperature, I just used a boiled spoon to scoop out the grains/spawn (wild bird seed in my case) and dumped a couple of spoonfulls of *spawn* on top of the phone book and then tied the bag shut again to colonise/incubate. You have a bag of fully colonized grains in that method, which you could use as spawn instead of fruiting straight from the bag next time you do it, if it is in fact clean, but kinda hard to tell if contaminants are hiding somewhere in the uncle ben tek, until you open it.

But the uncle bens does seem to dodge a PC which is pretty cool.

They're in a windowsill greenhouse, in full daylight. Nice and humid.

No clue on percentage, but I'm certain there's plenty, as it's not an airtight or fully-sealed "greenhouse".

Why do the holes need to be away from the sun?

Also, they've started fruiting. Problem is, I can see and feel young pins at points inside where I haven't cut holes. Should I cut it open wherever I can feel young fruits?

Thats debatable. Some people cut where they feel pin sets, some leave them go bc the mushroom will naturally abort them and divert the extra energy to where the exposure is. Sometimes I cut them free and sometimes I leave them be. Your call.

What are the pros and cons of those two options?
