It’s weird how natalensis has basically the same color scheme as regular cubes but just sliiightly paler. Always enough to identify it ime so far.

My experience with these is the overlay needs to be racked before pinning.  I had two different tubs and both overlayed and didnt fruit (previously) And I dont know if any one has experienced this but they seem to resist contamuinaton better than any cube.  I am on my 5th fruiting. Ill try the less spawn to substrate also.

The Natalensis myc ripped through that bag straw Hpoo and coir.
I cut the top of the bag off, dumped some casing on top and put it in a fruiting chamber a couple of days ago...

That looks awesome psilo, monster rhizo.

Which end would you guys go for? The thick defined fingers on bottom or the light feathery stuff on top.

Also looking at how all the rhizo originates from one tiny spot do you guys think it’s pretty isolated or just happened to grow that way. I can’t tell if it’s actually that narrowed down or if it’s just that one spot happens to thrive on super high nutes.

I’d go for that lower branch...

I think it’s just the nature of this mycelium.  Rhizomorphs actually arise more out of low nutrients rather than high... also your agar should have consistent nutrients throughout if you’re mixing it right.

PS: don’t transfer any cat hair!  🤣

This is the other plate.

I'm sure that it's nothing but I at least think it's interesting that the mycelium is willing to at least travel on the wood. I know dick about woodlovers and I'm also aware that this could mean absolutely nothing, but I figured I'd share and maybe someone else would find it interesting.

This one gets a big sad trombone.

I did totally neglect it though and let it dry out. I’m gonna dunk it and see what happens.

I feel like natalensis is so vigorous it would eat trash if you made it moist enough.

What temp are you guys fruiting at? I just read the monograph on p. Natalensis and apparently they were fruiting at 85 degrees when the second specimen was picked

Agar pin I’m cloning. Several popped up and all similar to this guy. Definitely different than a normal cube. It’s a baby, but strong  differences.

I feel like this variety makes me want to try it because it looks so difficult.. it’s like if a bunch of dudes were standing around and one of them was trying to open a jar of pickles and couldn’t, so one by one each dude is like “here, give it to me, let me try it”

This variety is the pickle posse

Looks frustrating as all hell but neat AF

That’s a great comparison man.

I’ve tried so many thing with the same clone that I’m starting to think myc selection is a huge part of it and going back to spore is the best move.

They do seem to like it kinda wet though, I’m about to try a half spawn tub in the pans fc but tuned a little drier than with pans.

The spores I have throw such a variation in mycelium growth though. It’s a bit overwhelming trying to decide what to grow. Almost every single T0 plate I have shows wildly different growth. I got pins on T2 from a nice transfer I’ve also got a quart almost done colonizing, so I’ll throw that into a sub. Haven’t decided what yet.

I agree that it’s dependent on what culture you have/decide to go with. Which doesn’t do much good until you grow a ton of them out. The mycelium is just so damn funky. I believe I got some blobs/weird growth underneath some tomentose growth. Hard to really tell. And it developed a few metabolites, despite being clean. But not in the normal way. Like a concentric ring of blue underneath some fluffy marshmallow type growth.
