only over a long time frame, if you heat the ocean up too quickly you don't get increased biodiversity you get a mass die-off. The problem is that the changes occurring are happening quickly, while evolution works slowly, far too slowly to balance it.

that's true, in my understanding the problem isn't that we're about to end life as we know it, but that we have fucked things up for what will likely be the rest of our civilization, worsening quality of life for generations of humans. Millions of years from now it will be moot, sure, but I don't really care about any perspective but the human one

I know you don't care about humans, it's very endearing.

I disagree that we can blame all humans for whats happened, the blame should fall squarely on the wealthy, governments and corporations. Everyone else is some form of victim in this shitshow.

I can only hope some of the assholes get cannibalized eventually, but I know that's too much to ask for.

Corporations are having babies?  This must be a new thing.  Still humans should do the right thing and just let the species die off.

babies aren't the problem, corporate interference in science and in government is the problem. The world does not have a population problem, it has a wealth disparity problem, with the wealthiest entities not only using far more resources than they need, but also actively sabotaging any chance of addressing both the injustice perpetrated by them, and the side effects of their indiscretions.

to blame people for having babies, whether a flippant joke or not, shows a disengagement with reality that I can empathize with, sure, but its not a sound argument.

You're not wrong, but all of those problems come down to one simple truth:  The world cannot support the current population living a first world lifestyle.

More direct to your point, the average Americans are those "wealthiest entities. . . using far more resources than they need."  If everyone in the world had the same standard of living, it would be far lower than our poor enjoy.  There are only a few solutions:

1. Technology that more efficiently uses resources (primarily energy) by several orders of magnitude greater than we have today.
2. Reduction in population
3. Reduction in standard of living for first world inhabitants.

That's pretty much it.  The first one is obviously optimum, if we can pull it off, but 2 and 3 are both doable and require humans to act against their fundamental natures.

Ok we mostly agree then. Personally I think we can limit consumption and be quite happy, but it doesn't help that we've all been encouraged to want as much material wealth as possible.

I also agree with a gradual reduction in population, which does eventually follow increased economic and social stability, barring insane religious dogma that we will have to phase out somehow

 Right on, except for point 3, (unless you're meaning the excesses of the top 1%).
I think point 2 has taken care of itself. Hans Rosling did an excellent doco on this.

we should edit the wiki saying something like "enlil claimed separating the heavens and the earths was a mistake and the human experiment didn't work"
I really can't see how that would hurt anyone.
