I'm not sure how I missed this one earlier. I looked again and found this one about 10ft away from the previous ones. This one was about 2.5" cap diameter.

I have a couple of questions i've been trying to answer myself with research, but I cant seem to find any concrete answers. Are Weilii and Psilocybe caerulescens different types of mushrooms? If so, how do you tell the difference between the two? From the photos i've seen, they look almost identical.

Weilii is the depreciated name. Theres a long story about stamets calling it a new species and I believe Alan proved it wrong with DNA sequencing. The correct name is psilocybe caerulescens not psilocybe weilii

no theyre the same kind although they do have alot of different forms and colors they can assume. microscopically theyre the same.(although ive never put them under a microscope) im just going by what ive read on this site. i noticed the grass variety can look completely different from the woodland variety and then if you look at the cultivated pics they look completely different from either of those. im no expert but even though ive seen pics with them having white stems i think the tan stem with the white scales at both ends and the stems almost look kind of marbled are a good indicator it might be weilii (caerulescens) if you look at ur first pic at the base of the stem u can see the white stripes on the brownish, tan, orangeish stem that screams weilii to me. but u cant just go by the stem thats only part of the process to identify, along with cap shape/color, size, its alot of reading but go through the GA actives threads year by year and ull get an idea of how different they can look from eachother even though theyre the same

thanks for the info. i've had 2 caerulescens finds (from the same area) id'ed from this forum, and i'm starting to understand how they can vary in appearance based on the stage of growth. as suggested, i'm going to run through the GA actives threads. I really appreciate all the help this forum has provided thus far.
