Shiitake Block: Consolidation, Or Contamination
    #27002455 - 10/25/20 09:51 AM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hey all! I've been growing 4 different shiitake blocks indoors, and I wanted some advice on one of the blocks. This block has developed some big black spots in various places, and this deep orange liquid that is present on some areas of the bag. My other bags do not exhibit this, just browning in some areas. I know shiitake consolidates but I'm not sure if that is what this is, or if it is a contamination. Pics below...If you have any questions I'll answer them the best I can, and I will take more pics if need be. Thanks in advance...

-Ben

Hello Ben,
With shiitake, orange metabolites and black-browning should be ok. Green is bad. It'll get progressively browner over the next few weeks. The other bags should follow suit shortly.

It does appear to be browning, and it is contained in a bag, so not much to do about it even if it was suspected as contaminated other than wait. That's a pretty big block, how are you going to fruit it? If you open it after it finishes browing and it smells bad, just throw it out then imo.

Is that bracish looking stuff gooey?
