What's your best remedy for a toothache? 1

My dentist appointment is 3 weeks away and the pain is getting unreal. I hate to even think it but smoking weed seems to make it worse.

Keep your mouth clean, don't smoke. Saltwater gargling can help. There are some OTC remedies you can buy as well but all of it is going to be just very short term temp bandaids until you see a dentist. If you have an infection and massive pain I would call to get your appointment moved up as infections can be dangerous.

Sounds like the nerve is dying and a root canal is in your future.
Rinsing your mouth with salt water and booze provides some relief.

I am on the standby list in the event of a cancelation but it's already been moved up as far as it can be. Regular new patient appointments are being scheduled in January it's crazy. I will try the salt water when I am home. It's for sure an exposed nerve attached to a cracked molar.
For some weird reason dental health feeds back to cardiovascular health.
When the pain first started I recalled an episode of Frasier where this was brought up. Very well could be my ticker too.

Since war zone medical decisions apparently apply: If you have a cracked tooth and the nerve is infected, the pain will build up to intolerable levels and then.. the nerve dies and you won't feel a thing at all.
Frequent rinsing with booze helps the nerve die.

Clove oil (eugenol) has worked well for me. Dentists often recommend it for dry socket packings. It disinfects, kills the nerve, and dulls the pain.

Seconding clove oil. I drop a bit on a cotton bud (qtip?) and apply it to the tooth in question.

Clove oil was one thing I did see repeatedly online. After a couple pages it seemed to get convoluted with remedies.
I have notice a couple beers does help tremendously. Not sure if that was the alcohol chemically or BP change alleviating the problem.

It's because your gums are highly vascular and any kind of infection in the mouth if left untreated can spread into the blood and thus into the heart.

Sorry to hear that man, that sucks.
My friend had really bad tooth ache and clove oil (pure 100%) was used with great effectiveness.
Also, stop smoking weed immediately. Its only making it worst (I know, it sucks. Edibles maybe?)

When my tooth cracked and started dying it was pretty painful. I used a lot of garlic. I would smash it up since chewing was difficult and then put the pieces on my gums between my tooth and cheek and it would make it numb. I also used Advil Liquid Gels and would cut the tip off and try and squeeze the contents on my tooth and gums. This tastes like shit but numbs up real nice too.

Warm salt water rinses periodically would do a lot for me. Letting the salt water sit in my mouth & soak on the tooth for a bit.
Surprisingly, I found naproxen/ibuprofen to be quite effective at dulling the pain.
Chewing up cloves of garlic, letting the garlic/saliva in my mouth sit and soak around the tooth for a bit.
Large doses of cannabis just to relax my mind/body and keep my mind at ease/off the pain...When the pain was so bad that all I could do was lay down I'd try to get super stoned. It doesn't make the pain go away or deal with the tooth ache specifically, but it helps me to relax for sure and I can sorta "drift away"/dissociate from the pain a little bit.
Kratom might help a bit with the pain, but I honestly feel like naproxen did the trick the most.
I've been through it a few times over the years....It is the worst . Sry to hear you're going through it at the moment.
Warm salt water and naproxen helped me a lot tho for dealing with the pain...Garlic can help with the infection/bacteria and therefore lessen pain...and cannabis & kratom helped me to relax and deal with the situation and dissociate from the sharp/throbbing pain.

1. Go and buy Sensodyne toothpaste. 2. Brush your teeth with your REGULAR toothpaste. 3. Rinse 4. Put a drop of sensodyne on your index finger and coat the painful teeth with it.
Sensodyne is like teeth plaster, it covers all the cavities and microscopic cracks in you teeth that exposes the nerve.
It won't solve anything in the long run but it will stop the pain.

It’s surprising they haven’t given you a course of antibiotic before your appointment. This is pretty standard if you have evidence of a low level infection at the site.

That’s not how it works. If you start a course of antibiotics you have to finish it. Taking them for a day when you’re supposed to take them for a week is how you breed resistant strains

You don't understand how doctors work do you? Or maybe you're just pretending to be an ignorant. .
Doctors are THROWING antibiotics at patients. Which breeds misuse( like not accurate timing/dosage), which breeds more dangerous bacterial resistant strains.

Well at least you corrected yourself and said misuse. Prophylactic antibiotics before oral surgery is not misuse. OP likely has a chronic infection inside his tooth.

but without the lidocaine and temporary filling
would the ice and vanilla and IB profin have worked?

Yes. Vanilla extract will act as a kind of numbing agent if you can get it on the nerves. Ibuprofen was the best thing that helped me besides the temporary filling. And I only used ice one night when the pain was so bad that I couldn't stand it. It worked but out of everything worked the least as it would only work as it is applied.

Thanks again for all the advice. I ended up grabbing some oragel since I was on vacation and had slim options for shopping. I did get some empty tea bags for soaking cloves next to the tooth and I'll try the vanilla extract in corrolation to the cloves. Just trying to endure and keep my mouth clean till the tooth is gone.
I am also surprised they didn't offer a quick inspection to determine if antibiotics were necessary until the appt. When the pain peaks it send a throbbing feeling of electricity through the left side of my head and I cant help but assume that's not ideal for what's left of my brain.

They will likely give you a root canal, give you shots to numb you, then drill the teeth empty, stuff it with a dental material and close it up with filling polymer.
That way you have the tooth, but no nerve, and thus no pain.

Oh man OP, I feel ya. I have a wisdom tooth that was cracked and finally broke in half a couple weeks ago. Sometimes the pain isn't so bad, other times it's extremely painful. Honestly some of the worst I've ever felt. I'm getting it pulled in a week.
It doesn't help for much else for me personally, but the ibuprofen/acetaminophen combo helps a lot. I hate taking the stuff, but its been helping a lot. I've been taking like 5 or 6 at a time twice a day, and it's cut the pain down quite a bit. I know its not good for my stomach or liver...but it gives me some relief until this tooth is out. I would recommend this option the most, as it's what has helped me the most so far.
A couple of clove oil drops in some mouth wash has been helping too temporarily when its bad.
I wanted cannabis oil to help, but it doesn't do nearly as much as I wish it did.
Benzocaine gel helped at first, but stopped working after a couple days. That stuff is horrible for you too, and I've stopped using it completely.
The nerves in your teeth are like Christmas lights or something. It's crazy, when its hurting really bad it sends pain signals up my face and down through my other teeth too.
This shit is awful, and I hope you can get in sooner than three weeks to get it taken out. I would suggest getting it pulled over a root canal personally if it's cracked. They might try to cap it or something too, idk...but if you get it taken out its done and there won't be issues with the tooth in the future.

Yeah I'm not happy about the benzocaine as a remedy but it does settle the throbbing down for a good hour. I'm trying to limit the use to 2 times a day. I as well might opt for just yanking it since it's been cracked for so many years but we will see what the dentist has to say about best options.
