First time grower - Is my batch okay?
    #27001851 - 10/24/20 08:22 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hello everyone

I chose growing Mushrooms as my new hobby and I am currently on my frist batch. Before I started I read all about keeping my equipment sterile and so on and chose to order my Agar and PF-TEK from a Mushroom shop.

After I used some spores to get started, it looked really well. There was growth. Nothing looked like contamination. After the mycelium grew on the agar plates it started to "shrink" and it gets less every day. Is my mycelium dying? I keep the Agar plates in a container that has always between 21°C - 25°C.

My PF-TEK jars are doing really well (as far as I can tell). All 5 of them got thick and consistent growth without any discoloration or sectoring. So at least that is working out.

But can someone explain to me what's going on with my Agar? The black dots in the pictures were from the spores I scraped into the Agar.

Here are some pictures:

the purpose of using agar is to clean up your culture. a germination plate usually has bacteria and mold spores so you need to transfer clean growth to a new plate as soon as possible. if you wait too long, your plate will usually get overrun by bacteria, yeast, or some other contam. you keep making transfers until you're left with a very clean culture like what you appear to have in your jar.
