Possible Contamination on UB Tek?
    #27001654 - 10/24/20 06:03 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So, I tried the Uncle Ben's tek since I was having a lot of issues that were hard to pin down. I figured I would go with the method that provided enough fool-proofing to figure out my own issues first.

Last Saturday, I inoculated 5 bags. For each bag, I added 4 hole-punch GEs in all 5 bags with micro-pore tape, fire sterilized the syringe between each bag, applied micro-pore tape over each innoc location, and cleaned all the bags with 70% alcohol. Since last Saturday, they have been in a closet with a thermostat monitoring the temperature. I've managed to keep the temperatures in that closet between 74F and 79F, with it mostly being at around 77.5 to 78.2 all week long. I checked them today and found these.

Bag 1

Bag 2

Bag 3

Bag 4

Bag 5

Based on suggestions and googling, I believe bags 1, 3, and 5 are all showing lipstick mold, though my partner reviewed the actual bags in person, and felt like it looked way duller than the pictures are showing. They suggested was to separating the bags and waiting.

I really am unsure how to proceed. Would separating the bad looking bags to a different part of the closet be safe to do to see what happens? Bags 2 and 4 feel firmer already, and they have a bit of white growth that looks like the mycellium growth pictures.

How would this infection have happened, and could it be the syringe? If so, I was curious if there was a method to go from a syringe to a more sterile growth? I really just want to get to a fruiting stage with a single mushroom to clone/get spores and do a bigger batch as I really do not have reliable access to spores.

I definitely understand appreciate the lack of full understanding that Uncle Ben's tek provides. I mostly wanted to have a good first grow before I start to dial in where to improve, but I feel a bit gutted, to be honest.

Thank you to anyone who can point me in a good direction.

The lighting is fucked but either way it's contaminated. Either it's a mold that you don't want like lipstick mold or it's a fuck ton of metabolites which indicates contamination.

If you want a good direction it's towards the trash can with those bags and the search function on this website on your phone. You should be searching pf tek, broke boi tek or some other easy options with better success rates

Would all 5 bags be trashed, or just the ones with color in the pictures? I have pulled up a video on the Broke Boi tek, but I couldn't get anything working in 6 jars for my PF attempt, though I think the syringe was bad.

Idk, the 3 I wouldn't trust. The other 2 are worth sitting on i guess

I would throw them all away.  If the other 2 aren't bacterial yet, they will be soon.  There's a reason nobody recommends the "uncle ben's tek"...

Don't feel gutted, UB tek blows. I did 24 bags with all ending up contaminated by bacteria within a week and the smell still haunts my nightmares. If you can't do agar, start with PF. More fun to watch them grow anyways.

Shroomery hates the UB tek, for some good reasons. The related subreddit maybe a better place to get more enthusiastic, but potentially less knowledgeable feedback.

I second RedBandit and think the PF tek is a great way to start. You don't have to fruit from the jars and can use your cakes to spawn to a shoebox fruiting in the same way that the UB tek suggests.
