So I have a serous issue. I turn off my room fan and turn on my flow hood for 20 min then I start pouring my plates of agar. Now after I'm done pouring I turn off my flow hood and move my plates to my shelf. Then fan for the grow room is turn back on. I'm starting to get alot of contam plates since I started running a fan. Could a plate contam if you have a fan running and no parafilm?? This has never happened before until I started running this dumb fan.
What sucks is I just transferred all the swabs I got from coke and they have green trench on the plates after a few days.

yes if they are not wrapped I reckon air currents could force things in over the lip from a side angle, doubly so if the plates are the vented type
just my opinion, dunno what science would have to say about it
I wrap mine, or if I am really lazy or know I will be working on them again real soon, I will stack them in fives or by variety or whatever and throw them in a fresh ziplock

and just use the end of a glad/saran wrap roll as your parafilm, save a whole lot of money over the years. I dunno, maybe para is cheap where you are, here it is not
measure a good 3cm wide strip or so and saw off the big roll with a sharp knife, you can make a bunch of little rolls at once and store them in a fresh zip. They are apparently sterile due to manufacturing reasons
I just throw the first 15 or 20 centimetres of wrap off the roll each time I sit down to do new SAB work, the rest should have been tight on the roll and still be sterile
think it was all from bod's agar tek at the time if I remember right, might be worth a look for ya
works real well here anyway

Yeah I figured it is the fan I have a strong current coming in here and no I don't wrap my plates. never had this issue until last week when I started using a fan because my temps were to hot in the house. Gonna try this Saran wrap idea.

1. strong fan do pushes the air in plates, for more info check on vent areas on plates.
2. on bright side you know a lot of bacteria that is in air or shelves waiting to get in to jars.
3. wrap the plates and make sure vent areas are cover well, chances are they still can get infected, imo i keep plates in drawer after two similar experiences i do that and its working for now.

Running a fan around plates that are not wrapped and now you see mold. Sounds like you answered your own question...

Yeah bod didn't take long for me to figure that one out I was more wondering who else has had that problem. At least it infected plates that were already transfers only one I'm scared of now is the most recent on my mystery from coke buffet. Sucks I might lose all 4 of those plates. But all the rest I can redo and save them easy.
I'm spawning some pans and cubes this week 27 tubs total. Waiting on more totes so I can get this rotation going.
