What to expect 2nd flush?
    #27000058 - 10/23/20 04:42 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

So I have harvested my first flush on these tubs, each pic a dif tub, I’m curious what to expect. I’ve been told that if you cut the shrooms with a knife or scissors, you will leave blue stumps. I’ve read that this will revert to mycelium, and that if you do the twist and pull method and aren’t careful you will damage the substrate.

So how long until this reverts to mycelium?

How long until I should expect my second flush?

Is it necessary to dunk/ heavily mist after my first flush?

Should I pick every single shroom? I’m afraid the small aborts will turn to mold if I don’t.(it’s hard to get the small aborts without touching the sub or damaging the substrate.

I usually leave some smaller shrooms that look like they will grow more, and they usually do. But what about the ones that are clearly not going any further? I hate picking those because I have before and they are usually only amount to 3-6g dry, which is alright but painful and annoying.

The paper towels is salt and a paper towel over trich or mold. I know once those tubs mature I’ll be tossing them, just saving them to get them to agar plates later when the mature ones are ready. Anything helps on how to prepare and expect a second flush.

Also, is it possible for a second flush to already be pinning if you take too long to harvest your first flush?

the stumps don't really turn back into mycelium, the mycelium just colonizes over them. You'll still see some blue bruising underneath from the stumps though.

I'd just leave them as they provide better surface conditions and the twist and pull method as you've heard can have pieces of mycelium coming off the substrate with your mushrooms.

Looks like you took care of the mold patch. That tub probably will keep getting mold but the other ones should be fine. I soak mine in water for an hour then put them back to fruit the second flush.

I saw how you can just pour water in the tub to lift it up, I already have a drain hole, but I don’t plan on soaking these because I made my sub way to wet, prob why I got mold a little easier and it was from spores. I’m sending some of this to agar on my next harvest. How long until I get my next flush? And what about all the baby shroomies? Pick them all?

No dont pick the small ones. First flush is over when they all mature and the cake runs dry. Then you soak and wait for 2nd flush.
What strain are these?

a few days til second flush.  But looks good. Do a heavy mist then. Even if you think the sub was too wet the fruits suck up all that water. Remember that mushrooms 🍄 are 90% water.

What will happen to the small ones? All the “aborts” I believe they are called. You can look at pics, I know most of my subs are contam’d so I did a experiment to where I will let some tubs have the little aborts left over after first sub, and the other tub I pulled every single
Fruit big or small once 80% or more were mature. What will happen to
The small ones that clearly aren’t going to get very much larger? Also like I mentioned I don’t plan on dunking these subs since I made my sub way to wet, literally the surface is soaked in water. But I also might not get a second flush on some of these because of the contam.. next round on my PE & APE tubs that are colonizing I plan on getting the water hose out after the first flush and filling the tub up until it floats and putting something on top of the sub to
Dunk it inside it’s own tub, but my only worry is I use a liner, so I’m worried touching the sub will damage it, still trying to figure that out.

Some looks like myc so w looks like cobweb. Either spray with a h202 mix or let it go and see what you can get

I just made a 1:10 ratio mix and sprayed the entire surface of the substrate pretty generously, I read another post that mentioned the ratio. And I figured since I can see it basically covering the entire substrate

Mold is generally the end of the line.

Sometimes if you're lucky moldy cakes can produce some measly fruits, but you'll waste your time trying to get much of a yield and better off to just learn from it by practicing better sterile procedures next time around

Mind you the only exception is cobweb mold where you can spray the cobweb with peroxide but I really don't recommend making this a habit - you have to mess up pretty badly to get cobweb mold so you should also probably just toss it and learn from it. But if you're really desperate to get some fruits cobweb mold is the one thing peroxide can be useful for. Peroxide damages mycelium to an extent as well.

I keep getting contams as soon as I spawn, during grain and g2g etc I have no problems, but I’m just starting agar so this should reduce contams once I have a clean culture. I have used the bucket tek when spawning, and I spawn in the open air, sometimes inside, sometimes garage, sometimes outside, I was told once 100% colonized grains you can spawn to bulk with no contam concerns, I used the damion elementary coir bucket tek, which I know isn’t true pasteurization, but coir and Verm doesn’t need to be pasteurized I’ve read on here. I’m
Thinking since I knocked up this specific tub originally with spores, that my syringe is dirty.

You are correct that coir and verm don't need to be pasteurized and that you can mix spawn with it in open air without too much concern for contamination.

However, if there are contaminants hiding in your jar that are hard to see you may not have truly 100% colonization since the hidden contamination can colonize just 1%. Additionally, although you can spawn in open air it is still a good idea to keep the conditions relatively clean (i.e. avoid spawning outside or in rooms with lots of dirt & wash your hands and all that). Coir verm and 100% colonized spawn are all very contamination resistant but they are not contamination-proof. Just like how humans fight off most viruses they come into contact with but the .1% of germs get through our defenses.

Based on what you've said agar should be able to solve your issue. If you use agar and have good sterile SAB/flowhood technique during your transfers there should be no reason to be getting contamination.

Yeah that is my hope long term. It’s funny cuz I dropped a bunch of dishes from spores and could see how some inoculations contain contams from the dirty spore syringes and some I got lucky with. Do you think it’s absolutely necessary to spawn inside where it maybe be more sterile? Rather than my garage or outside?(where I’m forced to spawn sometimes). There is no air movement in my garage compared to my house. I usually whipe the entire tub Down with ISO throughout the entire process. I’m a sterile anal asshole, just so I don’t have to worry about it, and I’ve done 10+ tubs this way so far and I have had contams in some jars and some tubs, but they are all from spore inoculation. We are talking cultures that have been growing from 1qt jars, G2G to 5qt bags, and then spawned to tubs, and have been expanding and growing for over 2 months, I hate starting with just spore inoculation now unless it’s to plates. I’m super excited to see how my agar culture work goes. I’m taking a step back until I have a few master cultures to try out, I actually dropped 3 bags to a from a left over plate I dropped spores on, hopefully without a transfer this will be clean. No contams in the spore plates.

Oh no it is not necessary at all - I was just saying it is good practice. If there is less air flow the garage might even be a better place. You can probably even fruit outside - I'm just saying it is good practice to do so in a clean environment. It is nowhere near as important as sterile procedures like using an SAB while your cakes are still colonizing (and thus very susceptible to contamination)

Only reason it is good practice to be clean during spawning is cause the substrate is never 100% contamination-proof but it is resistant enough at the spawning stage that contamination is very unlikely even in a less-than-ideal environment.
