High Sodium Well Water
    #26998407 - 10/22/20 05:53 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Just moved into a new house that draws its water from a well that has high sodium content (I believe 234mg/litre if im reading that report right). Is this something that could potentially hurt my yields?

I don't know the answer, but it may depend on what forms (sodium sulfate/phosphate/etc) and what the pH is. Do you know what the levels are?

My water is hard AF and grows barnacles on everything so I use reverse osmosis filtered water for the important things. Might be an option. I haven't had to descale my tea kettle in two years of using RO water.

If i were you, and i basically am because i have horrible well water stinks like egg fart cuz of the sulphur in it, thank me later and go buy some water jugs and find a local free clean water filling station. I shower and wash dishes with my well water and maybe water my gardens with it but other than that its all from my water cooler or poured out of a jug if its more than what i feel like standing at the water cooler for

Are you sure it’s not your water softener?
My last house I was in had a well. I always thought it was bad because it had a slight sulfur smell. But come to find out we had some of the most coveted water in the area. I think most people assume well water is a bad thing because of the bottled water fad which is actually bad for the environment. Good for you on getting a water test done though. I’m just wondering if this is straight from the well or after treatment. Your treatment may be the problem.

My understanding is that Sulphur in well water can actually benefit mushrooms, so im not worried about that, just the high salt content. There is a whole house filter that the main water line runs through first but it's not treated. I don't drink it but do everything else with it. With the amount of tubs I'm growing, using jugs of fresh water is far too labour intensive unfortunately.

234 is just barely over the AO of 200, but sodium has a habit of being more readily uptaken than other minerals which can cause issues at least in plants.  My gut feeling says to install a small undersink RO system for the fungi/drinking.

To save some searches:

Aesthetic Objective - The Aesthetic Objective (AO) is established for parameters that may impair the taste, smell, or colour of water; or which may interfere with the supply of good quality water. They do not cause adverse health effects.
